Esquelbecq: Flemish architecture and book culture
Accommodation in Esquelbecq
Esquelbecq combines Flemish architectural history with book culture, walking trails and a range of activities. For individual visits and activities, it is worth checking dates and accessibility in advance.
Flemish architecture and history
The Château d’Esquelbecq is classified as a Monument historique (Historic Monument). The protected grounds include the moats, park, garden and outbuildings. Its main construction phases date from the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. Visitors to the estate can explore the château, gardens, kitchen garden and landscaped park. Themed tours, workshops, exhibitions and gatherings are planned throughout the year. Check the specific dates before travelling; public access arrangements may change seasonally.
The Église Saint-Folquin dates from the 10th century and was continually altered until the 17th century. This development resulted in a typical Flemish hall church with three naves of equal size. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 20 July 1945. Its bell tower is open to the public and can be reached via 75 steps; its carillon has 23 bells. Check the tower’s accessibility before visiting.
Book culture and historical themes
The Village du Livre is home to permanent booksellers. It also offers book-related events, storytelling walks and artists’ workshops. Individual activities may vary. Les Gigottos Automates is a 200 m² workshop featuring electric and electronic automata. Numerous workshops for the whole family are offered there throughout the year; opening hours and the workshop programme may change.
The Musée-Mémorial de la Plaine au Bois explores the history of the Battle of Wormhout-Esquelbecq-Ledringhem and the little-known rear-guard fighting of Operation Dynamo. It displays personal belongings and tells the life stories of survivors. A second room complements the exhibition with a video featuring testimonies and faces. Check the opening arrangements before visiting. The La Plaine au Bois site has a viewpoint with an orientation panel, from which visitors can understand the positions and intensity of the fighting.
