Erquinghem-Lys combines a short walk with local history and cultural points of interest. Topics range from a fortified position and the Château d'Erquinghem to religious buildings and textile history. There are different options for your stay: a walk with views and opportunities to observe nature, a museum visit during set opening hours, or a look at the town’s historical development.

Walk with nature watching and views

The easy walk takes 25 to 30 minutes and leads to the Halte nautique erquinghemmoise. Along the route, you may spot ducks, coots, grey herons, and a pair of swans with their cygnets; sightings vary by season. From a rise along the walking route, you can see the Monts de Flandre and numerous church towers. The stated duration makes the route easy to fit into your schedule, while birdwatching and the views offer different experiences. If you want to fit a walk with a set duration into your day, 25 to 30 minutes gives you a specific planning estimate. Conditions on the route may change; check them before setting out.

Museum and annual exhibition

The Musée de la Cité d'Ercan is open on Sunday afternoons from March to the end of October, from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free; groups can visit the museum on weekdays by appointment. The arrangements therefore differ depending on the day of the week and group size. Opening hours may change, so it is advisable to check them before your visit. The Erquinghem-Lys et son Histoire association ends its season with an annual exhibition around November 11. If you plan to attend this exhibition, check the specific event dates in advance.

Fortified position and Château d'Erquinghem

Around the 10th century, a fortified position stood between the road to Estaires and the Lys. In 1214, Philippe Auguste’s troops stormed it and razed it completely. The Château d'Erquinghem is another historic landmark: Vauban had the castle dismantled in 1678; in 1814, it was completely demolished. These events mark different periods in the town’s history: the fortified position and its destruction in the Middle Ages, on the one hand, and the castle’s dismantling in the 17th century and complete demolition in the 19th century, on the other.

Religious buildings and textile history

The chapel and church also offer different insights into the history of architecture. The Chapelle Mésséan, also known as Notre Dame des 7 Douleurs, was rebuilt in 1931. The plans for Église Saint Martin were drawn up by architect Afchain, and its stained-glass windows were made by Chigot de Limoges. The church therefore offers an opportunity to consider its architectural design and stained glass as distinct features. The Ancienne usine de blanchiment Mahieu adds the textile industry to these themes: the factory specialized in bleaching textiles and belonged to the textile giant Mahieu. As a cultural site, it connects local history with former textile production.

Plan your stay around your schedule

Two different options can be included in your day’s plans: a walk with a stated duration and a museum visit with seasonal opening hours, or an appointment for groups. If you are looking for a hotel in Erquinghem-Lys, you can plan your stay around your interests and check opening hours or exhibition dates if a museum visit is important to you. The walk can be planned separately as a short activity.
