Gommegnies offers two themes that bring different perspectives to planning a stay: a varied religious heritage and the Forêt de Mormal south of the municipality. Anyone looking for a hotel for a trip to Gommegnies can first consider whether local history or trails through the forest landscape should be the main focus. Historical landmarks range from a former fortified church to chapels dating from different centuries; the forest adds another dimension, with hiking trails and paths that can be used by bicycle.

Churches and Chapels: Different Periods of Construction

Gommegnies has two churches as well as fifteen chapels, oratories and calvaries. The Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is a former fortified church dating from the 16th century; its bell tower was rebuilt in 1866. The Eglise Saint-Joseph on Place de Carnoy was built at the end of the 19th century and funded by the residents of the time. This places the 16th-century Notre-Dame and the late-19th-century Saint-Joseph side by side in a comparison of their dates; 1866 marks a separate point in the history of the bell tower. The funding provided by the residents of the time adds a social dimension of local history to the construction history of Saint-Joseph.

The Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue was built in the 17th century, and the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Affligés in the 18th century. The two named chapels thus span successive centuries of construction, adding dates to the history of religious buildings between the construction periods of the two churches. Together with the churches, they represent several distinct phases in Gommegnies’ building history.

Forêt de Mormal: Landscape and Local History

The Forêt de Mormal lies south of Gommegnies, along the Chaussée Brunehaut. Historically, Gommegnies’ economy was connected with the forest, particularly through the manufacture of wooden clogs. Two clog-making workshops have been identified in Gommegnies. The forest economy thus adds a craft dimension to the history of the religious buildings: the connection with the Forêt de Mormal concerns not only the landscape, but also the town’s former economic character.

Trails, a Route and a Bus Connection

The Forêt de Mormal has numerous hiking trails as well as paths that can be used by bicycle. The Chemin de la Licorne is a 13 km route starting in Gommegnies. These offer different starting points for planning: in the forest, you can make your choice of activity the main consideration; for the Chemin de la Licorne, the route length is specified. You can use the distance to plan your journey, while the forest paths can be considered in terms of whether they are suitable for walking or cycling. Before setting out, it is a good idea to check the latest route information; conditions on forest paths can also change.

The bus connection may also play a role in choosing your travel dates. Route 990 connects Valenciennes, Gommegnies and Le Quesnoy. If you include it in your travel plans, check the timetable before setting off, as schedules and service patterns may change.
