Bouvines brings together the memory of the 1214 battle, religious and architectural heritage, and trails of varying lengths. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Bouvines, you can choose your location based on your main interests: Église Saint-Pierre and the memorial sites, a walk, or both.

The history of the battle at Église Saint-Pierre

Église Saint-Pierre was rebuilt from 1880 to 1886 as a memorial to the Battle of Bouvines. The battle took place on Sunday, 27 July 1214. Philippe Auguste, King of France, faced Ferrand, Count and Governor of Flanders. The church interior also brings this historical connection to life: 21 large stained-glass windows depict the battle, each measuring 8 m × 3 m. The windows were installed between 1889 and 1906 and classified as historic monuments in 1981. Les Amis de Bouvines organise guided tours of the church and its windows.

Another link to the battle is the carrière du Curé. The path of that name is part of the ancient Roman road from Seclin to Tournai, which crossed the Marque at this point. Philippe Auguste’s army marched along the carrière du Curé during the battle on 27 July 1214. Les Amis de Bouvines also organise guided walks through the village and its surroundings, including the former battlefield.

Chapels, pilgrimage routes and historic buildings

The Chapelle St Léonard was built in the mid-19th century by François Duponchelle. It once marked the footpath used by workers from Templeuve or Orchies on their way to Lille, Roubaix or Tourcoing. The chapel was also associated with processions by the people of Bouvines: on the Tuesdays of Rogation Days, they went there to pray for good harvests. This tradition lasted 130 years. An annual pilgrimage took place at Fontaine St Pierre on 29 June. Its tradition dates back to the 13th century and continued until 1974.

The statue of Jeanne d’Arc is also associated with a specific historical period: it was erected on land belonging to the Dehau family between her beatification in 1909 and her canonisation in 1920. At the Petit Château, it is worth distinguishing the present building from its possible predecessor. The present building was constructed in 1696 and later altered; the first building, however, is said to date back to the 11th century.

Walks by distance and theme

The Balade culturelle is an accessible circular route through the historic village centre, taking in religious, architectural and rural heritage. It is listed as 1.8 km, or 2.7 km with the alternative route. A longer option is the approximately 7 km Randonnée-photos découverte: a photo treasure hunt around Bouvines in the direction of Marais de Bonnance. As its format may change according to local updates, check in advance whether it is currently taking place. The Boucle de la Marque is an 8 km walking route along the Marque through woods and meadows.

The options thus differ both in theme and stated distance: the Balade culturelle offers two shorter route options, while the photo treasure hunt and the Boucle de la Marque cover around 7 and 8 km respectively. The figures give you a useful guide for planning without specifying a walking time.
