Vaour can be planned around specific places and a recurring summer event: the Commanderie des Templiers represents the town’s history, while L’Été de Vaour is a performing arts festival. There is also the Collection Pôl Roux in the church and two dolmens classified in different ways. When planning your trip, it helps to consider these themes separately: festival dates depend on the individual edition; history, the art collection and the cycling route provide other specific points of reference for a stay in Vaour.

Commanderie des Templiers: history and architecture

The Commanderie des Templiers in Vaour was founded around 1160 by soldier-monks returning from the Crusades. In 1909, the Commandery was designated a historic monument. Its architectural features included a 19-metre-high donjon, or fortified tower.

During the festival, the Commandery is set up and used as a venue for performances. The historic site is therefore also part of the festival programme.

L’Été de Vaour and festival dates

L’Été de Vaour takes place every summer in Vaour and is a performing arts festival. Its first edition was held in 1986. Originally devoted to burlesque theatre, the festival now includes circus, concerts and clown performances. If you are travelling for the festival, check the dates and programme for the current edition so you can plan your trip around specific events.

The festival also features a Village Gourmand with local dishes. This food offering is available during the festival period and should not be planned as a year-round feature if you are travelling outside that period.

Art in the church of Vaour

The Centre d’Art Pôl Roux is located in the church of Vaour and houses the Collection Pôl Roux. It comprises around fifty works created to decorate the church.

Two dolmens and a cycling route

The two dolmens should be distinguished by name. The Dolmen de Peyro Lebado is near Vaour and is the largest dolmen in Tarn. The Dolmen de Vaour is a different point of reference: on the return leg of the Circuit VTT n°22 Vaour-Milhars, the route passes it. The circuit is designated a Site VTT-FFC. The two landmarks therefore have different practical uses for trip planning: Peyro Lebado is notable for its proximity to Vaour and its size, while the Dolmen de Vaour is identified by the route of the cycling trail.
