Payrin-Augmontel brings together several themes you can consider when planning a stay: walks and birdwatching, church art, local culture and sport. The Espace Nature Lo Bruguet offers trails and opportunities to observe nature; churches, a monument and fountains provide insights into architectural and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in the area, these different interests can play a role in planning your trip.

Walking trails and birdlife at the Espace Nature Lo Bruguet

The Espace Nature Lo Bruguet has circular trails, benches, a birdwatching station and information boards about the development of the site, its flora and its birds. Designed as a place for relaxation and walks, it also features games for children and young people, as well as picnic tables. Numerous birds nest in the Espace Nature; the European bee-eater can also be seen there. Such sightings are seasonal. Individual facilities may be renovated over time, so it is advisable to check their current condition before visiting.

Churches and historical traces

The Église de Payrin was built by Cistercian monks around an earlier chapel. The choir and the first bay of the nave date from the 14th and 15th centuries. A bay is a structural section of the nave. Inside, the corbels on the pillars are decorated with leaves, angels’ heads, fantastical animals, unicorns and dragons. The motifs combine plant designs with human and fantastical figures.

In the Église d’Augmontel, the holy-water font is considered the church’s finest ornament and a testament to Augmontel’s significant past. The two churches thus have different points of emphasis: at Payrin, the focus is on architectural history and the varied motifs on the corbels, while at Augmontel, it is on a particularly noteworthy piece of church furnishing. For a cultural and historical focus during your stay, this comparison offers two different perspectives on the local churches.

Culture, remembrance and fountains

The MJC d’Augmontel preserves local and regional traditions through dances, songs, music and Occitan theatre. It is considered the oldest MJC in the Tarn department and the third-oldest in France. The cultural forms of expression and the history of this institution are therefore among Augmontel’s distinctive features.

A memorial plaque in the Payrin cemetery commemorates the 34 employees of the Manufacture Eugène Alba La Source de Payrin who died for France during the First World War fighting from 1914 to 1918. In Augmontel, the Puits de l’Arnaude is a preserved stone well; a few other wells can still be found in the village. The plaque and the wells point to different aspects of local history: one commemorates people, the other is a surviving structure.
