Saint-Urcisse: Walking Trail and Church
Accommodation in Saint-Urcisse
Saint-Urcisse lies in the Lendou Valley. A marked circular trail starts at the church and leads through the surrounding countryside. The church is also a point of reference for the history of the building and the village. This gives you two distinct themes to focus on when planning your trip: a circular route with stops in the countryside, and the historical and architectural features of a specific building.
Hiking Around Saint-Urcisse
The marked hiking trail starts at Saint-Urcisse Church and follows a circular route through the surrounding countryside. At the beginning, it passes between two small lakes; later, the route follows a small stream. On the hillside, the circular route joins the GR 65 before returning to Saint-Urcisse. This sequence gives the route a clear progression: lakes at the start, a stretch along the stream, and the junction with the GR 65 on the hillside. If you are planning the hike, you can use these stops as waypoints along the route.
Church and History
The church is also of cultural and historical interest. At the end of the 10th century, it was the center of an important seigneury. The oldest surviving parts of the building, however, date from the 15th century. These dates describe different aspects: the first refers to the church’s historical role within a seigneury, while the second refers to the age of the oldest surviving parts of the building. The structure includes a nave and transept; the bell tower is above the choir. Inside, the corbels supporting the vaults are sculpted. The church’s history and architecture can therefore be explored through different features, rather than reduced to a single date.
Countryside and Walking Trails in Tréjouls
The landscape can be considered at two scales. Saint-Urcisse lies in the Lendou Valley; at the level of the municipality of Tréjouls, there are five zones of ecological, faunal, and floral interest. The Barguelonne and the Lendou also flow through the municipal area. These zones and rivers refer to Tréjouls as a whole, not just the village of Saint-Urcisse.
The Sentier Expo is located in the wider municipal area of Tréjouls. It is an easy, one-kilometer forest walk, with 30 large animal photographs displayed in the trees along the trail. The animal images give it a different theme from the circular route starting at the church, which passes lakes and a stream before joining the GR 65. If you compare the two trails, you can use this difference between the animal images and the circular route’s countryside stops as a guide.
Fête and Products from Saint-Urcisse
The Fête de Saint-Urcisse takes place every year in July. The specific program may vary. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the event dates for your planned travel period.
GAEC du Lendou produces organic grains, fruit, fruit juices, chickpeas, millet, flour, and sourdough bread baked in a wood-fired oven. The range may change. The farm sells its products directly at the farm, at a location in Saint-Urcisse; check before you travel whether direct sales will be available during your visit.
