Féneyrols: Heritage and trails along the Aveyron
Accommodation in Féneyrols
Féneyrols combines architectural and religious history with trails along the Aveyron. When planning your trip, you can focus on a cycling tour, a hike or the historic buildings. A very small part of the commune lies within a designated Natura 2000 site. The former spa buildings have been preserved in Féneyrols on the right bank of the Aveyron. A park of around two hectares has also been preserved.
Cycling and hiking along the Aveyron
The 85-kilometre Véloroute Vallée et Gorges de l'Aveyron connects Montauban with Laguépie and passes through Féneyrols on the section between Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and Lexos. Another option is Circuit Cyclo n°10: Alimenterre. This cycling loop takes a there-and-back route to Féneyrols, passing the château, the church and the metal bridge over the Aveyron. The two routes follow different courses: the Véloroute connects Montauban and Laguépie, while the Circuit focuses on the there-and-back route to Féneyrols.
On foot, the PR1 Féneyrols: Boucle de Féneyrols is a very easy, yellow-marked circular hiking trail covering 6.7 kilometres. It takes around two hours to walk. The trail follows the Aveyron towards the former spa. Check the current trail markings and route before setting out. The PR1 also passes a bivouac site opposite the former spa. The site is equipped with picnic tables, toilets and a shower; check on site whether you can use the facilities before relying on them.
Nature and seasonal activities
L'Hoplie Bleue offers guided nature outings near Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the Tarn-et-Garonne département. During the walks, you can discover the natural heritage. Topics range from geology, fauna and flora to photography and astronomy; the outings last around two to six hours. This lets you take both the subject and the approximate time commitment into account when planning. Check the latest outing details before making plans.
In summer, water sports on the Aveyron are among the activities available to visitors in Féneyrols. Traditional fishing is also one of the local activities. The guided nature outings, with their themed topics and varying durations, therefore differ from the seasonal water sports available on the river.
Buildings and history
The Château de Féneyrols was built to protect a ford. The façades and roofs of the western buildings were listed as historic monuments by decree dated 16 February 1951. The metal suspension bridge, Pont suspendu de Féneyrols, is of historic and architectural interest to visitors. It connects the D115 with the village and lies on the tourist road through the Gorges de l'Aveyron.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Féneyrols dates back to the Priory of Saint-Jean-des-Champs. This depended on the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Antonin and was built around the 9th century on the ruins of Gallo-Roman baths. During the annual Journées du patrimoine, visitors can see the nave, flanked by four chapels, and its azure-blue ceiling. Check the local programme before your visit, as this opportunity to visit is tied to the event.
The Chapelle Saint-Pierre aux Liens de Féneyrols was built in the centre of the village in 1768 by the de Rous family. The Église Saint-Clair de Quergoalle is also said to have been built in the 9th century; a fine view can be admired at the foot of its bell tower. The Église Saint-Julien de Carrendier is thought to date from the 9th century, and its nave was extended. The churches and chapels thus offer a range of historical points of interest: from the origins of a former priory to the architectural forms and settings of the individual places of worship.
