Accommodation in Boudou
Boudou combines landscapes, birdwatching and cultural heritage with opportunities for hiking. It is also home to the Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax and a marked circular trail through valleys, orchards and Chasselas vineyards.
Viewpoint and birdwatching
Boudou’s viewpoint is located just above the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers and the Canal des Deux Mers. On a clear day, you can see the Pyrenees on the horizon. This long-distance view is therefore subject to a specific condition: visibility on the day of your visit is what matters. The viewpoint can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by car. Check local conditions before setting out, especially if you plan to travel by a particular means.
On the banks of the Garonne lies Boudou’s ornithological observatory. It offers the opportunity to observe both migratory and resident birds. The birdwatching therefore includes both birds passing through and those that live there. The viewpoint and the observatory offer different highlights: the viewpoint is about the setting by the rivers and canal and, on a clear day, views as far as the Pyrenees; the observatory focuses on birdlife along the Garonne.
Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax and cultural heritage
The Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and was initially associated with the lordship of Montesquieu. One distinctive feature is its regionally typical triangular bell gable with three sound openings. One of them houses a bell from the 16th century weighing around 137 kilograms. Alongside its history, this gives the building a specific architectural feature to look out for. A medieval fountain is also part of Boudou’s cultural heritage. The bell therefore dates from a later period than the construction of the chapel.
The chapel is open to visitors on Sundays from Easter to All Saints’ Day, between 10 am and 6 pm. These opening hours apply during this season and on this day of the week, so plan your visit accordingly and check the hours again before setting out.
Circular trail and GR 65
The marked “Circuit de la Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax” circular trail is 8.3 kilometres long. Its route passes through valleys, orchards and Chasselas vineyards. The trail offers a hiking experience with a specified distance and landscape, while the Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax also has a place in Boudou’s cultural heritage.
Boudou is also on the GR 65 towards Santiago de Compostela. This adds a different point of reference to the circular trail: the “Circuit de la Chapelle Saint-Pierre d’Ax” is a marked route with a stated length, while the GR 65 is defined by its direction towards Santiago.
