Rampoux: Church, Wine and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Rampoux
Rampoux brings together village history, church art, rural trails and culinary traditions. You can plan your trip around a range of interests: explore the history of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, plan a hike, or discover wine and local food culture.
Village History and the Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens
The village of Rampoux is arranged around a watering trough. In the past, herds stopped here in the morning and evening. Together with the wooden frame once used to keep cattle still while their hooves were being shod, it recalls different aspects of rural daily life: providing water for the herds and caring for the animals. Both details add a sense of the village’s former history and working life to the view of the church.
The Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens is a small, compact building dating from the 12th century. Two chapels were added in the early 16th century, forming a kind of transept. The building thus reveals different periods of construction: the original church was followed by the addition of the chapels.
The south chapel contains well-restored wall paintings from the late 15th or early 16th century. They depict the Annunciation, the Flagellation, the Crucifixion and the Entombment. The church thus combines its architectural history with a sequence of images whose date cannot be narrowed down to a single year.
The church is closed to the public outside of services. The key can be collected from the Rampoux municipal office. Before travelling, contact the municipal office for access information and check the phone number.
Walking Trails and Landscape
The Circuit de l’Église Saint-Martin circular trail starts in Lavercantière, is 10 kilometres long and is classified as a difficult hiking route. It takes about three hours to walk; on the return leg, the route passes through Rampoux. For planning purposes, it is important to note the distinction: Lavercantière is the starting point, while Rampoux lies on the return leg.
There is also an equestrian trail in Rampoux. Ask locally about its availability. The small Ourajoux stream winds through peaceful rural landscapes. Near Rampoux, trout fishing is possible in the Ourajoux stream. Check the applicable rules and seasonal conditions before going fishing.
Wine and Local Food Culture
Domaine de Sabrézy produces red wine, rosé and ratafia under the AOC Cahors and IGP Cote du Lot designations. The winery welcomes visitors at its premises in Rampoux to introduce them to its different wines. Confirm in advance that a visit is possible on your chosen date; product availability may also change.
At La Poule au Pot, a stuffed hen is cooked in simmering vegetable broth over wood fires. The annual La Poule au Pot meal attracts almost 600 guests. Since 1985, the Rampoux and Lavercantière festival committee has organised the “La soupe à la poule” event every year on 14 July. If you are travelling around that date, check whether the event is taking place in your year of travel.
