Thégra: Church, Castle and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Thégra
Thégra combines historic buildings with two walking trails and a festival celebrated every autumn. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the town’s architectural history, outdoor activities or a seasonal event may help you decide. The church and castle represent different historical themes; the routes differ clearly in length, difficulty and activity.
Church and Crypt
The church in Thégra is a small Romanesque building whose structure dates from the 12th century. A crypt lies beneath the church crossing, where an altar dating from the 12th century has been preserved. In church architecture, the crossing is where the nave, transept and choir intersect; this places the crypt beneath the central area of the church. The church and its crypt were protected as historic monuments by a decree dated March 9, 1923. The dates refer to different things: the 12th century relates to the church’s structure and the altar, while 1923 marks their protection.
Castle and Architectural History
Today’s Château de Thégra was built on the site of an older castle after Quercy was freed from English occupation around 1443. Its rectangular main building has two round towers at the northeast and northwest corners. A third tower on the south façade contains a spiral staircase. The castle’s façades and roofs were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated June 29, 1960. The dates refer to different things: around 1443 relates to the history preceding today’s château, while 1960 marks the listing of its façades and roofs.
Walking Trails Starting at the Church Square
Both the Boucle de Bral and the Circuit des fontaines start in the square in front of Thégra’s church. The Boucle de Bral is a very easy, family-friendly 4.5-kilometre walking route. The Circuit des fontaines is a moderately difficult 12-kilometre route for walking or mountain biking. The Boucle de Bral is therefore the considerably shorter and easier walking option; the Circuit des fontaines also offers mountain biking. Check local conditions before setting out.
Autumn Festival and Landscape Context
Every autumn, the Fête de la Noix in Thégra celebrates walnuts. The festival includes demonstrations, food markets and opportunities to meet producers. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
The landscape’s history also has a time-limited connection to the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park. The municipality of Thégra was among the areas whose municipalities were classified as a Regional Natural Park for ten years from the publication of the decree of October 1, 1999.
