Issendolus – Heritage, Remembrance and Tours
Accommodation in Issendolus
Issendolus brings together religious heritage, a memorial site and tours through the Quercy Causse. If you are looking for a hotel in Issendolus, these highlights can help you plan your stay around your interests: architecture and history are just as central as cycling and horse-riding activities. Key places include HĂ´pital-Beaulieu, the Church of Saint-Julien and Gabaudet; for active outings, there are two circular routes of different distances and difficulty levels.
HĂ´pital-Beaulieu: Monastic History and a Listed Monument
At the Hôpital-Beaulieu site, the chapter house of a former convent of the Hospitaller Sisters has been preserved. The convent existed from 1236 to 1793 and stood on the route to Rocamadour and Saint-Jacques. Since 1921, the chapter house has been listed and protected as a historic monument. Extensive stabilisation and restoration work took place between 2021 and 2025. The chapter house is located in the Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy.
These periods give the site different historical associations: the history of the convent, the monument's current status and the more recent work on the chapter house. HĂ´pital-Beaulieu is also one of the locations where local circular routes are shown on information boards. If you are interested in the connection between architectural history and landscape, you can make the chapter house one of the highlights of your stay.
The Church of Saint-Julien and Sainte Fleur
The oldest part of the Church of Saint-Julien in Issendolus is Romanesque. The apse and chancel bay probably date from the 12th century. The church houses a reliquary containing relics of Sainte Fleur; a 19th-century stained-glass window depicts Sainte Fleur with roses. The relics were returned to the parish in 1859 and put on display for veneration in 2014.
The church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Opening hours may change, so please check the information before your visit. This can help you plan your day and allow time to see the church and its various architectural features.
Gabaudet: Memorial Site and Dolmens
Gabaudet is a memorial site commemorating the massacre and deportation of resistance fighters and civilians on 8 June 1944. The site is open to visitors. A stele names some of the victims, and remembrance ceremonies are held there every year. If you wish to attend a ceremony, check the date in advance.
Gabaudet is also home to two dolmens, which are on private property and have been classified as historic monuments since 1934. One of the dolmens has a 11-tonne capstone. The private ownership is an important distinction from the memorial site, which is open to visitors; therefore, do not plan to visit both as if they were the same stop.
Circular Routes in the Quercy Causse
Le chemin des Dolmens et des Cazelles is a very easy 9 km mountain-bike loop starting from Issendolus. It is suitable for a family outing through the Quercy Causse, along paths and dry-stone walls and past the remains of Hôpital-Beaulieu. The second circular route, La Randonnée du Causse, is 15.9 km long and also starts from Issendolus. It is listed as taking around 4 hours 30 minutes and having a moderate difficulty level; it is accessible to horse riders and mountain bikers.
The two routes differ in length, difficulty and stated duration: the 9 km route is very easy, while La Randonnée du Causse is longer and moderately difficult. The longer route offers a glimpse of the Causse's varied features, including rural architecture, crosses, dry grasslands, dry-stone walls, cazelles and dolmens. Route information may change; check the details before setting out.
The municipality of Issendolus displays information about local circular routes on boards at HĂ´pital-Beaulieu, by the town hall and in Garry. These locations can help you find your bearings if you want to include local routes in your plans.
