Floressas: Château, Cahors wine and Terres Rouges
Accommodation in Floressas
Floressas offers travelers several distinct points of interest: a château in the village, the architectural history of Église Saint-Martin, wine experiences in the area and the geological formation known as Terres Rouges. If you are looking for a hotel in Floressas, you can already organize your trip around these themes: the château and church focus on construction phases and architecture, while the wineries focus on the type of visit and its conditions. Floressas lies between the Causse, the Lot Valley and the Quercy Blanc. This geographic setting complements the municipality’s specific historical and geological points of interest.
The Château of Floressas
The Château of Floressas stands in the village; its main construction phase dates to the 14th century. The oldest surviving state of the building is no earlier than the second quarter of that century. A residential building and two main towers have survived. The residential building and the two towers formed the west side and the northwest and southwest corners of a quadrangle, presumably arranged around a central courtyard and measuring nearly 40 meters on each side. The arrangement around a central courtyard remains a probable reconstruction; the residential building and towers are part of the surviving structure.
Église Saint-Martin: reconstruction and floor plan
At Église Saint-Martin, medieval foundations meet a later reconstruction. This was ordered by decrees of the Conseil de la Généralité de Montauban on March 21, 1752, and the Intendant on April 29, 1752. The church was completed in 1762 on the foundations of its predecessor, which dated to the 14th century. Ten years therefore passed between the decrees and completion; the foundations also point to the earlier church.
The floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross and includes a rectangular nave, two side chapels and a flat-ended choir. Above the high altar stands a canopy supported by two red Corinthian marble columns. The church thus combines a clearly described overall floor plan with a specific detail of its furnishings. For your travel planning, this offers two distinct historical perspectives: the building history, from reconstruction to completion, and the design of the church interior.
Cahors wine and visits
The Floressas area belongs to the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée for Cahors wines. Château de Chambert is located on the upper slopes of Floressas in the Lot, produces AOC Cahors wines and is transitioning to biodynamic farming. The winery offers guided tours with tastings lasting around an hour and a half. This approximate duration gives you a concrete timeframe for planning.
Château Laur offers visits by appointment on Sunday mornings and public holidays; arrange a time before you arrive. The visitor information therefore differs: Chambert gives an approximate duration, while Laur’s appointment requirement and available visiting days are the key details. The two wineries thus offer different points of reference when you want to fit a wine visit into your stay.
Terres Rouges and the landscape
Floressas lies between the Causse, the Lot Valley and the Quercy Blanc. The Terres Rouges are a reddish geological formation in Floressas; they are located in the hamlet of Segos within the municipal area. The geographic details describe different scales: the three landscape regions situate Floressas, while Segos identifies the hamlet where the Terres Rouges are found. Those interested in landscape and geology will find both an overview of the surrounding area and a specific geological point of reference.
