Poueyferré combines connections to nature with local history and several routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Poueyferré, historic sites, routes and activities can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The places to visit range from the Natura 2000 site to castle grounds, churches and a riding centre.

Nature and views

The municipality’s natural heritage includes the Natura 2000 site “tourbière et lac de Lourdes”. The French name refers to the Lourdes peat bog and lake, giving this natural feature a specific place name. The Tour de Baloum offers another perspective: the route passes through woodland to a viewpoint overlooking Lourdes and its Château fort. It therefore links a woodland section with a named destination and views of the town and its fortress.

History in specific places

The Château d’Antin, a fortified site, lies west of the village. The grounds of a medieval castle that belonged to the d’Antin family from the 14th to the 16th century are now home to the presbytery and school. The castle’s history and the present-day buildings are therefore tied to the same site, but belong to different periods.

The Église de Poueyferré was built in 1867. It was built on the ruins of an older church, which had been completely devastated in 1569 by Montgomery’s Huguenot troops. This earlier church stood on the Way of St James. The two dates mark different events: the destruction of the predecessor church in 1569 and the construction of the present church in 1867. At the same time, the history of the older church connects this place of worship with the Way of St James.

There is also an old church near the ruins of Saint-Germes Abbey. It was dedicated to Saint Germier, a 7th-century bishop of Toulouse. This dedication gives the site its own connection to Germier, distinguishing it from the story of the Église de Poueyferré, which focuses on the present church and its predecessor.

Routes and activities

The “Chemin Henri IV et lande de Bartrès” gravel loop passes through Poueyferré and starts and ends at Lac de Lourdes. Loop route no. 10, “Lourdes – Le chemin Henri IV”, also passes through the municipality. The descriptions emphasise different details: for the gravel loop, they specify its gravel character, start and finish; for loop route no. 10, its passage through Poueyferré is the local connection. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their respective descriptions.

Another place to visit is the Centre équestre – Ferme Artigues at 27 Chemin de La Coste, 65100 Poueyferré. Ferme Artigues invites visitors to meet its horses, ponies and donkey. For travellers interested in horses, this is a specific activity alongside the historic sites and routes. The places mentioned thus cater to different interests without needing to be combined into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
