Arcizans-Avant combines historic buildings with hiking trails and seasonal mountain activities. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Arcizans-Avant, these different interests can shape the focus of your trip: the Église Saint-Martin and the feudal castle represent the village’s architectural history; as for activities, options range from a moderate circular hike to seasonal hiking and ski touring. This lets you give culture and exercise separate priorities.

Église Saint-Martin and the Feudal Castle

The Église Saint-Martin has Romanesque origins and was completely restored in the 17th century. It was listed as a historic monument by decree dated March 21, 1979. These three details place the church in context in different ways: its architectural origins, its restoration and its protected status.

Today, only the keep and the perimeter walls of the feudal castle remain; the keep dates from the 14th century. The site known as “Butte du chñteau dit du Prince Noir” was listed by decree dated January 29, 1944. For the castle, the focus is therefore on the surviving structures, while for the church it is on its origins and later restoration.

Saint-Roch Chapel and Its History

Saint-Roch Chapel adds religious history to the architectural story. Its existence is documented from 1656; between 1658 and 1697 it was sometimes called N-D de la Castùre. A church inquiry in 1783 recorded that two pilgrimages set out from the chapel: one on the eve of the anniversary of the Virgin Mary’s birth and one on Saint Roch’s day.

Remains of the chapel survive at the site. From the village, follow the path to the clearly visible pylon to reach it; near the summit, a slate plaque on the left marks the location. As conditions can change, check the trail conditions before your visit.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

La Boucle de l'Arrieulat passes through Arcizans-Avant and is a moderate circular hike covering 6.1 kilometers, with a stated duration of three hours. The route is accessible year-round, although trail conditions may vary by season. Check them before setting out; the distance and duration also give you a concrete basis for planning your time.

The Circuit VTT n°10 – Val d'Azun – Le Cabaliros also passes through Arcizans-Avant. The VTT designation indicates a mountain biking route. This lets you distinguish a circular hike with a stated distance and duration from another type of activity.

Seasonal Activities on Cabaliros

The Natura 2000 site “Moun NĂ© de Cauterets, Pic de Cabaliros” also extends across the municipality of Arcizans-Avant. In the northern part of Cabaliros, hiking is one of the area’s summer tourist activities. In winter, ski touring is practiced particularly toward Cabaliros; conditions vary from one winter to another. This seasonal information can help you choose when to travel based on the activity you have in mind.

Visitor Information

The Église Saint-Martin is open to visitors; confirm access in advance, as conditions may change. The church is less than a 30-minute walk from the ARGELÈS-GAZOST – LycĂ©e & CollĂšge bus stop. Use the time estimate as a guide and check the current route when planning.
