Avezac-Prat-Lahitte combines village history with a green landscape shaped by meadows. Prat and Lahitte are small, pleasant villages. The commune lies on the edge of the Baronnies, facing the Pyrenean mountains. Historical remains from different periods and outdoor activities are both available as you plan your trip.

Tumuli, Tower and Village Church

The Tumulus of l’Estaque is associated with the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. It has been classified as a historic monument since January 26, 1970. Avezac-Prat-Lahitte is also home to a significant protohistoric necropolis dating from the Iron Age. It includes several tumuli, some of which are also classified as historic monuments.

The dates refer to different remains: the Tumulus of l’Estaque is associated with the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, while the necropolis dates from the Iron Age. The square Tour d’Avezac is thought to have been built in the 12th century. These prehistoric sites and the history of medieval architecture offer distinct points of interest.

The medieval Tour d’Avezac overlooks the village; its base is accessible. It is considered the remains of a fortified site around which the village developed. In 1997, the tower was restored by the commune of Avezac. Check trail conditions before your visit.

The village church offers another historical highlight. It dates from the 15th century and was later altered. Its most distinctive feature is an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece, classified as a historic monument. At the center of the monumental altarpiece is Saint Bartholomew, the parish’s patron saint, beneath the Virgin Mary.

Hiking and Landscape

The D’Avezac à Prat hiking route combines views of the Pic du Midi with the medieval tower, a fountain, and the church of Avezac. The route is listed as taking four hours and covering twelve kilometers, with an elevation gain of 450 meters. These details offer different points of reference for planning: the time required, the distance, and the climb. Views and trail conditions may vary; check current route conditions before setting out.
