Labastide combines prehistoric themes with hikes that each have their own character. The Espace Préhistoire de Labastide presents prehistory on an outdoor tour; caves offer insights into underground themes and prehistoric art. The hikes focus either on a circular route with specific time and distance details or on a route through the Baronnies Valley.

Prehistoric themes in Labastide

The Espace Préhistoire de Labastide offers an immersive outdoor tour with activities, scientific explanations, and sensory experiences. This combination relies not only on information, but also on different ways of presenting it. The focus is on the daily lives of hunter-gatherers who inhabited this area around 15,000 years ago. This date is approximate; the subject itself turns the focus to how people lived.

Participatory workshops explore prehistoric hunting, fire, and cave art. They complement the tour with specific themes that offer different ways to understand the past: hunting as an activity, fire as part of life, and cave art as a form of expression. If you are particularly interested in how the experience is presented, the tour and workshops differ in that the former combines activities, explanations, and sensory experiences, while the workshops are designed for hands-on participation.

The Grotte Blanche presents the underground world of prehistoric hunters and Labastide’s prehistoric treasures. The focus is therefore on the underground perspective. The Grotte aux chevaux de Labastide offers a different perspective: it features more than 200 engravings and rock paintings, including a polychrome horse. The number conveys the scale of the surviving depictions; the multicolored horse is a specific individual motif. The Grotte dite de Labastide ou des Chevaux also has a historical designation: it was listed as a historic monument by decree on August 3, 1983.

Hikes with different focuses

Le Tour de Labastide is an easy 7-kilometer circular hike, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. It starts at the car park of the Espace Préhistoire de Labastide and follows GR78 markers as well as yellow trail markers. The distance, walking time, circular route, and specified markers give you several concrete details to help you assess this hike.

The landscape is also part of its character: Le Tour de Labastide passes through meadows and forests, then offers views from mountain ridges towards the Pic du Midi. This means the route combines different landscapes with a named viewpoint. The distance and duration indicate the time required; the meadows, forest, and views from the ridge give the hike its landscape setting.

The hike D'Esparros à Labastide follows old paths through the Baronnies Valley. Its route passes over the Col de Coupe, by the Gouffre d'Esparros, and through the Espace Préhistoire de Labastide. Compared with Le Tour de Labastide, its defining focus is the sequence of these named places and landscape features; Le Tour, by contrast, is described in terms of its distance, duration, and easy circular route. You can therefore choose between a hike with specific time and distance details and a route whose described course is shaped by several named stops.
