Discover Ancizan through its historic buildings, museum and mountain trails. The sites and routes appeal to different interests: architecture and local history sit alongside hikes, a pilgrimage route and seasonal activities at the Hourquette d’Ancizan.

Historic buildings and village character

In Ancizan’s Ousten district stands the 12th-century Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It has a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse. The bell tower is partly clad in slate; another detail is its wrought-iron cross. The nave is the elongated main space of a church, while the apse is the adjoining area, semicircular here.

The Maison Oustalet is a Renaissance house that bears witness to the village’s significant textile history. High attic floors lie beneath a mansard roof; stepped gables and a large dormer with elaborate sculptural decoration define the building. The Maison Castet at 3 Rue de Loumet offers another architectural detail: dating from 1568, it is recognizable by its distinctive stair tower. In the historic village, surviving window frames and weathered wooden barn doors recall the former cloth trade. Together, these features offer different insights into Ancizan’s architectural styles and textile past.

Museum and regional cuisine

The Musée de la Vallée d’Aure is an ecomuseum on Route de Saint-Lary in Ancizan. It presents the valley’s past through 16 reconstructed scenes of everyday life. These include historical objects, contemporary photographs, traditional costumes, eyewitness accounts and traditional music. The focus is therefore not only on individual objects, but also on scenes from daily life. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions in its gallery throughout the year; check the current exhibition details before visiting.

The Cidrerie d’Ancizan runs a restaurant serving cuisine from southwest France. The menu features regional specialties such as tapas, grilled dishes and garbure. The Cidrerie also sells cider year-round and houses a museographic area. Menus and opening hours may change, so check current operating arrangements before your visit.

Hikes and pilgrimage route

The Boucle d’Ousten is a 4.09-kilometer walking route that starts and ends in Ancizan. It runs from Ancizan to the small hamlet of Ousten, then descends towards Guchen. The loop can thus be identified by its clearly named waypoints; check local trail conditions before setting out. Ancizan is also a stage on the GR 105, which is associated with the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The circular walk and the long-distance trail stage are different ways to explore the area’s routes.

Lakes are another possible focus for hikes. Lac de Montarrouye lies in the communes of Ancizan and Campan; it can be reached on foot from Payolle. This describes an approach from Payolle, not the route of the Boucle d’Ousten. The two destinations can therefore be distinguished by their respective starting points.

The Hourquette d’Ancizan through the seasons

The road over the Hourquette d’Ancizan runs from Saint-Lary-Soulan to Ancizan. The ascent begins at an elevation of 812 meters; from the summit, the descent leads towards Lac de Payolle. A path also leads from the Hourquette to Lac d’Arou, at an elevation of 1,786 meters. Road conditions and access may vary by season; check conditions before driving or hiking.

When the road over the Hourquette is closed to cars, the area is used for ski touring and cross-country skiing in winter. Closures and snow conditions vary. Ancizan is also part of the 4 Véziaux grazing area: in summer, shepherds drive cattle, horses and sheep to higher elevations. These seasonal activities differ from the routes and hiking destinations, adding another perspective on the mountain landscape.

Bus connection

The ANCIZAN – Route d’Arreau bus stop is less than a ten-minute walk from the Cidrerie d’Ancizan and is on the Lannemezan–Saint-Lary-Soulan route. If you plan to use the bus connection, check the current timetable.
