Saint-Aventin brings together pilgrimage history, Romanesque architecture and mountain trails. Two place names are important when planning your trip: Superbagnères is within the municipality of Saint-Aventin, not Bagnères-de-Luchon. This distinction makes it easier to identify the different sights and tours without losing sight of their separate starting points.

Pilgrimage church and historical traditions

The church of Saint-Aventin is a Romanesque pilgrimage church and houses the tomb of Saint Aventin. Its architecture includes two bell towers typical of the Pyrenees. The portal decorated with sculptures and the historiated capitals depicting scenes from the life and martyrdom of the saint are also noteworthy. The interior contains remarkable wall frescoes. In this way, the church brings together several aspects of local religious history in a single building.

The pilgrimage in honour of Saint Aventin is also part of the area's history. It took place on the saint's feast day, 13 June. For centuries, it attracted pilgrims from all over the Pyrenees and from Spain. The Chapelle et le pas de Saint-Aventin is associated with a slab of schist containing an elongated hollow. According to tradition, it is said to be the hermit's footprint—a local legend that you can distinguish from the documented architectural features of the church.

Protected landscapes and local context

The Chapelle de Saint-Aventin and its surroundings have been part of a protected natural and urban landscape zone since 3 November 1944. The municipal pastures on the Plateau de Superbagnères are a separate area, included in such a protected zone since 27 April 1927. In addition, part of the classified Vallée du Lys area lies within the municipality of Saint-Aventin. These details refer to different areas and dates; for orientation, it is worth considering each in relation to its specific location.

Cromlechs and mountain trails

The cromlechs of the Espiau range lie above the village. You can visit them from the village on a walk of about one hour. The tombs at the cromlechs are dated to between 3000 and 2000 BC. This makes both their location above the village and a specific archaeological date central to the site.

For mountain bikers, the Tour du Plateau de Superbagnères is a difficult MTB loop: it is 14.8 kilometres long, has 534 metres of elevation gain, and starts and ends in Superbagnères. Another type of tour is the moderately difficult Skirando-Marmottes ski touring loop. It starts in Saint-Aventin, covers 3.42 kilometres and has 650 metres of elevation gain. These details help you see the cycling and ski tours as distinct options, and assess each according to its own route and difficulty.

Skirando-Panoramique is described as an easy route with exceptional views of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees. A hiking route marked with the GR10 also starts on the Plateau de Superbagnères and heads towards the ridgelines. These are two further points of reference, in addition to the MTB loop and the ski tour. When hiking or touring in the mountains, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.

La Chapelle in Superbagnères

La Chapelle in Superbagnères is a restored former chapel that now operates as a mountain restaurant with a panoramic terrace. As opening arrangements and facilities may change, check the latest information before visiting. This makes it a separate dining option to include in your plans, distinct from the churches, landscapes and routes that define Saint-Aventin.
