If you are looking for a hotel in Larroque, you can choose your destination based on different interests: medieval architectural history, natural heritage or walks with a local-history theme. These topics give your travel planning specific points of reference. The “Restes du donjon” refer to the former manor house of the Counts of Sabran; the “Balade des sobriquets” presents village history through the nicknames of its houses. Nature includes the Forêt de Cardeilhac, home to one of the département’s most significant Middle Spotted Woodpecker populations. When planning your stay, it is helpful to start by asking which of these themes interests you most.

History: The Keep and Remembrance

The “Restes du donjon” date from the 12th century and are the last surviving part of the former manor house of the Counts of Sabran. The keep is therefore a structural remnant of the former estate, not the manor house preserved in its entirety. On 11 June 1930, the remains were listed as a Monument historique by decree. The 12th century indicates when it was built, while the 1930 decree marks when it was listed. For travelers interested in medieval architectural history, this distinction makes the historical reference more specific.

The Monument des passeurs commemorates Jean Bazerques, Joseph Barrere and Pierre Sabadie, who died in 1944. It complements the architectural history with a memorial that places three people by name at its center.

Natural Heritage: Forests and Birdlife

Larroque’s natural heritage includes the Type 2 ZNIEFF “Massifs forestiers de Cardeilhac et de l’Escale.” It covers 1,680 hectares and extends across six communes in the département. The 593.49-hectare ZNIEFF “Forêt de Cardeilhac” also extends into Larroque. One of the département’s most significant Middle Spotted Woodpecker populations lives in this forest. The nature sites differ in scale: the massif covers six communes, while the Forêt de Cardeilhac is associated with a specific bird species. Together, they offer a perspective ranging from a larger forest area to the presence of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker.

Walks and Event Dates

The “Balade des sobriquets” is a recurring guided walk in the commune of Larroque. The 2025 edition presented the history of the village and its residents since the 17th century through the nicknames of its houses. Rather than focusing on a single historic building, it explores the history of the village and the names associated with its houses. The walk took place in 2023, 2024 and 2025. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check the date of your chosen edition in advance.

The Trail de Larroque is a recurring sporting event held as part of the village festival. Trail running, hiking and mountain biking were announced for the third edition on 22 August 2026. Its focus differs from that of the Balade des sobriquets: several sporting disciplines take center stage as part of the village festival, while the Balade shares the history of Larroque and its residents. If an event date determines your travel plans, check the latest announcement in advance.
