Bessières on the Tarn
Accommodation in Bessières
Bessières lies on the Tarn between the Pays albigeois and the Pays toulousain. When planning a stay, there are several themes to choose from: the open-air market, local history, water sports, and the protection of turtles and other species. A walking trail through the countryside is another option. The right time for your visit depends on whether you would rather visit the market or take part in seasonal activities.
Market and local history
The open-air market takes place on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Esplanade Bellecourt. More than 50 vendors are represented there; at times, there are as many as 70. The stalls offer food, fruit and vegetables, clothing, meat and charcuterie, as well as cheese. As market hours may change, check the schedule before your visit.
During the Ancien Régime, four annual fairs were held in Bessières. The decision to hold the market on Mondays was also made during this period. A visit to the market therefore connects with a specific chapter of local history, without equating historical fairs with what is offered today.
Traces of history
The development of Bessières is traced back to the period of Roman occupation and associated with a river bridge across the Tarn. Between the 9th and 12th centuries, the settlement grew around a first church dedicated to Saint Prim. These details represent different historical stages: the town’s earlier development by the river and, later, the settlement around the church.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste dates from the 15th and 19th centuries. Its octagonal Toulouse-style bell tower dates back to 1593; one of its bells is damaged. A history-focused tour can therefore include both the town’s development and a specific architectural feature. The first church dedicated to Saint Prim and the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste should be understood as two different churches.
Nature, walking and water sports
At the edge of Bessières, the Tarn is part of the Natura 2000 network. From spring to autumn, the Refuge des Tortues welcomes visitors to raise awareness of nature conservation and turtle protection. Its work includes the conservation and study of endangered species, as well as monitoring the reptiles and amphibians found on the site. Seasonal visits and ongoing conservation work offer two distinct ways to engage with the subject.
“Le Tour des Marcais” is a family-friendly walking trail through the countryside. The starting point is the car park at Lac des Marcais in Bessières. The 17-kilometre Voie verte can be accessed near the ECONOTRE centre and crosses the Val’Aïgo area.
The family-friendly water sports area Original Green Park in Bessières is open to everyone from April to October. Activities include wakeboarding, wakeskating, water skiing, and stand-up paddleboarding. For water skiing, there are two out-and-back tow lines with six modules of varying difficulty: one line for beginners and one for advanced riders. The stated operating months and the different levels offered on the lines help you plan your visit according to the season and your interests.
Omelette tradition and when to visit
Another distinctive part of local history is the tradition of sharing an omelette on Easter Monday. It led to the founding of the Confrérie Mondiale des Chevaliers de l’Omelette Géante in 1973. The Confrérie is open to everyone, and its omelettes are distributed free of charge. This tradition is a cultural landmark in its own right, alongside the market, the church, and outdoor activities. The reference to Easter Monday describes the tradition, not a specific event date.
The visiting opportunities vary considerably by season: the market is held on Monday mornings, Original Green Park operates from April to October, and the Refuge des Tortues welcomes visitors from spring to autumn. If one of these destinations is a deciding factor in your stay, plan your travel dates accordingly and check the current market schedule.
