Grenade offers several reasons to visit: its historic bastide, a market hall with multiple functions, distinctive architecture and a range of activities. You can plan your stay around your main interests, whether they are architectural history, a walking route, pottery or harness racing.

Bastide, market hall and historic architecture

The Bastide de Grenade was built in the 13th century on a grid plan, with straight streets. Its orderly street layout is as much a part of its character as its individual historic buildings. The Halle de Grenade offers another insight into the town’s architectural history: it covers 1,850 m² and still retains some of the original fir and oak timbers of its roof structure. These timbers were felled in 1292.

The hall combines commercial and administrative functions. The ground floor hosts the market and fairs; the upper floors house administrative offices and the consuls’ communal rooms. The different uses are thus located within the same building. A visit to the hall therefore highlights both its role in market life and its administrative history.

The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is a distinctive architectural landmark. Its octagonal brick bell tower was inspired by Toulouse’s famous bell towers; inside, the church has a Baroque high altar retable. The Pont de Save is also one of Grenade’s historic landmarks and is one of the town’s four historic monuments.

Walking and pottery

If you would like to include a walk in your stay, consider the “Boucle de Grenade – Le Canalet” route. It starts and ends in Grenade and follows the Canalet. Route details may change, so check the current route before setting out. This keeps your planning specific to the route without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

At the Atelier Terres & Ô, an artisan offers pottery introductions. During a visit, you can watch her pottery techniques; sessions are available by appointment. As appointment arrangements may change, it is best to confirm that a visit is possible in advance. This activity suits a stay that includes not only buildings but also traditional crafts.

Harness racing, play area and market

The Hippodrome de Marianne covers 11 hectares and has two sand tracks. Several harness races, including special events, are held there throughout the year. As race schedules may change, it is advisable to check event dates in advance. This calendar can offer a different way to choose when to visit than the permanent landmarks of the bastide and market hall.

Pitchoun Parc is a family-friendly play area for children aged 2 to 10. Opening details may change, so check the latest information before visiting. This lets you include the activity in your plans without assuming a specific opening time.

Grenade market offers poultry as well as seasonal fruit and vegetables. The seasonal fruit and vegetable selection differs from the hall’s permanent features and historic use. If you would like to include market produce in your plans, note that the fruit and vegetable offerings mentioned are seasonal.
