Discover Daux
Accommodation in Daux
Daux offers several ways to plan a stay: the history of the fortified village, the architectural history of its châteaux and church, a walking trail with views over the Save Valley and Bouconne Forest. There is also the regular “Le coin gourmand” market. You can give culture, nature and a possible market visit different priorities as you plan, before looking for a hotel for your travel dates.
The fortified village’s history and buildings
The bell tower of Église Saint-Barthélémy dates from the 14th century. This octagonal brick structure is listed as a historic monument. Its shape is considered typical of the Toulouse region. The tower was also used as a defensive tower: guards protected the village with three small cannons. Inside the church is a very large ensemble of stained-glass windows.
The 17th-century Château de Peyrolade stands in the village centre and was part of the village’s fortifications. In 1626, the building was raised and fitted with battlements and weather vanes. Traces of the former walls and deep ditches can still be seen today. Comparing it with the church tower reveals two aspects of the village’s defensive history: the tower’s role as a defensive structure, and the château’s role as part of the village fortifications.
Château de Lalo also bears witness to architectural changes: it was extensively renovated in 1760 and restored several times later. It has three square towers with small loopholes; the fourth tower has disappeared. The château is privately owned and cannot be visited. Check its visitor access status again before your arrival.
Walking trail and natural environment
The Boucle de Daux is a circular walking trail that starts and ends in Daux. It offers panoramic views over the Save Valley, follows the Ribarot stream and passes through the Poterne de l’Isle, a narrow passage between houses. The valley views, stream and narrow passage are distinctive features of the same route. If you would like to include a walk in your stay, you can plan the Boucle as a separate option.
Bouconne Forest covers more than 2,700 hectares, of which 160 hectares lie within the municipality of Daux. The forest has been protected since 2009. It is designated as a ZNIEFF and is home to rare plant and animal species.
