Mondonville: Heritage, Park and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Mondonville
Mondonville combines historic buildings, parks and nature, as well as routes for walks and hikes. When planning your trip, you can focus on architectural history or outdoor activities. Notable architectural landmarks include the Tour de l’Horloge, the Château de la Tour, the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and the Pigeonnier; along the Gajea and in the Bouconne Forest, other aspects of the landscape take centre stage.
Historic buildings and preserved details
The hexagonal Tour de l’Horloge was built between 1844 and 1852 from pebbles and hand-cut red bricks. Its shape, materials and construction period give the tower a distinctive profile and place it in the mid-19th century. The medieval Château de la Tour tells a different architectural story: two towers remain, marking the fortified entrance. A well with a diameter of 2.2 metres still stands in the former castle courtyard. The towers belonged to the entrance, while the well is located in the area of the former courtyard.
Romanesque elements of the original structure are preserved in the wall beside the churchyard of the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens. In front of the church stands the 1875 statue of Our Lady of the Fields by J. Lefèvre. The Pigeonnier features a different architectural detail: its traditional “en pied de mulet” roof has openings for pigeons. Together, these buildings reveal a range of distinctive features, from historic materials and preserved sections to a special roof shape.
Park and nature along the Gajea
The Parc de la Tuilerie covers two hectares, and the Gajea stream winds through the park. Shady benches, picnic tables and play facilities for children are among its amenities. Around 60 tree species shape the park landscape. These practical facilities and the variety of trees make the park a place to take a break and enjoy time with children; you can appreciate it both for its amenities and its leafy setting.
The Le Gajea walk passes through a blue corridor that provides a habitat for species associated with water. In clear waters, kingfishers and white wagtails hunt for fish and insects. This makes the stream a specific nature feature of the walk, though individual bird sightings are not guaranteed.
Hikes and routes
Mondonville lies on the edge of the Bouconne Forest, managed by the French National Forestry Office (Office National des Forêts). Its numerous trails are used for walking and mountain biking. A named hike also leads to the forest: the 18.5-kilometre PR20, “Dans la peau du naturaliste de Bouconne,” starts in Mondonville’s Cœur de ville and goes as far as the Bouconne Forest. The forest therefore serves two distinct purposes when planning: it is a landscape on the edge of town with trails for walking and mountain biking, as well as the destination of this specific hike.
An adapted version of the heritage trail is available for visitors with reduced mobility. At its inauguration in September 2022, the route was described as a family-friendly, educational walking trail with seven information panels at notable places in the municipality. This description relates to the occasion at the time; the adapted version is a separate option for visitors with reduced mobility.
Activities for children in the cultural programme
The municipal cultural programme offers a range of activities for children. Once a month on a Wednesday, Martine from “Lire et faire lire” tells stories at the Médiathèque during “Histoires sur le tapis.” During school holidays, “ciné-goûters” are held on Wednesday afternoons: a film is followed by a snack. The storytelling session takes place monthly, while the film event follows the school holiday calendar; both schedules may change. Check the latest programme details before visiting.
In summer, family events called “Bullons aux parc” take place in the Parc de la Tuilerie. Dates and content vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates and programme details in advance.
Mondonville offers a variety of ways to choose a theme for your visit: architectural history with dated and preserved details, nature along the stream and in the forest, and cultural activities for children with their own schedules. The PR20’s length of 18.5 kilometres is a specific planning detail; for events, the relevant time frames are the month, school holidays or summer.
