Saint-Léons is built amphitheatrically on a hillside. Nature, trails and the life story of Jean-Henri Fabre offer visitors several specific themes to explore: the botanical trail introduces plants and habitats, Micropolis and the insect garden turn the spotlight on insects, and dolmens and Fort Bas add to the area’s cultural heritage.

Botanical Trail and the World of Insects

The Sentier botanique de St-Léons is a 2.5 km circular route that takes about two hours. A shorter, one-hour out-and-back option complements the loop; the two options therefore differ both in route type and estimated time. Around 30 signs along the trail introduce trees from different natural habitats. The trail is freely accessible year-round.

The Jardin d’insectes dit du perce-oreille introduces insects found around the vegetable garden, orchard, pond, compost and woodpile. Information signs explain their importance. The garden is free and freely accessible year-round. Micropolis’s indoor visit includes a tropical butterfly house and a huge ant colony. Its chemin de la biodiversité features four areas: la Toubière, les Haies des proies & des prédateurs, le Coin des recycleurs and l’Allée aux papillons (& autres butineurs...). Cotton grass and sundews grow in the bog area.

Routes Around Saint-Léons

La balade de Jean-Henri Fabre is a 3.5 km family walk around Saint-Léons that starts at Micropolis. It leads visitors to discover Micropolis, the botanical trail, the insect garden and Jean-Henri Fabre’s birthplace. Another route, Sur les pas de Jean-Henri Fabre, starts at the Micropolis car park in Saint-Léons.

Geocaching also combines exercise with discovery: in Saint-Léons, it is a smartphone-based treasure hunt for hidden caches in the village. To get started, park opposite the tourist office and continue on foot. Before your outing, check that the app and caches are available.

Jean-Henri Fabre and Local History

The Maison Natale de Jean-Henri Fabre in Saint-Léons presents the surroundings in which the entomologist spent his childhood. It includes an adjoining exhibition room with a collection of preserved insects. On 18 December 2025, the French Ministry of Culture announced that the birthplace had been awarded the “Maison des Illustres” label.

The Peyrelevade Dolmen measures about 5 m × 3.4 m. The site offers a viewpoint over the surrounding Grands Causses. Fort Bas adds to the area’s historical heritage: it is a freestanding building that was fortified at the end of the Middle Ages.
