The Canyon de Bozouls is a natural horseshoe-shaped cirque. The Dourdou flows along its floor, following a course that is at times turbulent and at times calm, forming a wide loop. High above the river, at the end of a rocky promontory, stands the Church of Sainte-Fauste. The canyon, river and church shape the landscape in different ways: through the form of the cirque, the course of the Dourdou and a building steeped in history.

Church of Sainte-Fauste and the Canyon

The main part of the Church of Sainte-Fauste dates from the 12th century. Its position high above the Dourdou creates a striking architectural connection to the canyon landscape. While the cirque describes the natural form of the place, the church provides a tangible historical landmark. In Bozouls, nature and architectural history are therefore not interchangeable sights, but different aspects of the same landscape.

Walking Trails and Orienteering

The canyon has three PR walking trails open to everyone, measuring 2, 4 and 6 kilometres. The wooden footbridges allow you to cross the Dourdou at any time of year and offer views of the gorges. There are several trail lengths to choose from, while the river crossing and viewpoints shape the route through the canyon. Check local conditions before setting out; after severe weather, pay particular attention to the condition of the trails.

Orienteering in Bozouls is another option. It includes a full course of around 6 to 7 kilometres, a northern course of 4 to 5 kilometres and a southern course of 3 kilometres. These figures distinguish a longer overall course from two shorter alternatives. Together with the PR walking trails, they offer a specific choice of distances, without combining the different options into a single route.

Experience and Understand the Landscape

On the banks of the Dourdou, donkeys and goats maintain the Canyon de Bozouls and its rock faces in a natural, ecological and sustainable way. Walkers, including children, can approach the animals freely. Their presence may vary by season, so please follow local guidance. The ecopastoralism programme in Bozouls also provides information about flora, fauna and geological influences.

Terra Memoria is an interactive discovery centre in Bozouls. It presents the history of the Aveyron landscape, from the formation of the Earth to the present day. This broad timescale complements the immediate view of the cirque and river with the story of how the landscape developed. For group visits in 2026, check access arrangements in advance.

More Trails and Activities

Visitors can cross the canyon on the Tyrolienne de Bozouls zip line. This activity is seasonal; check operating dates and booking options in advance. In 2026, the former Bertholène–Gabriac–Bozouls–Espalion railway line can be explored on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike or by hybrid bike. The options therefore differ both in how you get around and in the conditions that apply. Check the surface and the weather before setting out along the former railway line.

The section between Bozouls and Espalion passes through several tunnels and over viaducts. Not all tunnels are lit, so bring a lamp. This advice is particularly useful when planning this section and applies regardless of which of the listed ways of getting around you choose.

Workshops and Crafts

Enclume & Barbotine invites you to explore knife-making and ceramics workshops and discover a shop featuring its own creations alongside works by other selected craftspeople. Opening hours may change due to ongoing commissions. If you plan to visit, check the hours in advance.
