Docelles: Paper History and Trails
Accommodation in Docelles
Docelles can be explored through two specific themes: the history of paper-making and trails with different focuses. If you’re looking for a hotel in Docelles, these themes can help you plan your stay. The historical dates span several centuries of paper mills; outdoors, you can choose from a marked hiking loop, a cycling route and a puzzle trail through the streets.
The Paper History of Docelles
The Moulin du Grand Meix was established in Docelles in 1478 as the town’s first paper mill. The Papeterie de Vraichamp was established downstream along the Barba in 1492. An accidental fire destroyed the Vraichamp paper mill in 1789; it closed in 1914. The Papeterie de Lana was built in 1590; the Krantz family acquired it in 1792. Its high-quality papers with fine watermarks helped make Docelles known around the world. These dates tell the story of early mills, later ownership, and the importance of paper quality to the town’s reputation.
Forest Trails and Viewpoints
The Haut-du-Bois loop passes through varied scenery, where forest trails alternate with open areas. Numerous viewpoints offer views across the surrounding valleys. The loop also passes the former LANA paper mills. This route thus brings together the landscape and a tangible connection to the area’s former paper-making industry.
The loop is marked with a red circle. A red triangle links the forest with the centre of Docelles. Route markers may change; check the current markings before setting out.
When choosing between the two routes, the main difference is the format: the Haut-du-Bois loop is a hiking trail, while La vallée du papier is a cycling route.
Cycling Route and Puzzle Trail
The La vallée du papier cycling route starts at the motorhome parking area on Place de l'Espine and crosses the Barba via a small bridge. Check the latest route and access information before setting off, as these details may change.
Randoland Docelles is a family-friendly puzzle trail through the streets of Docelles and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The activity includes four puzzle sheets: one for adults and three for children, divided by age group. This means that alongside the sheets for children, there is also a separate version for adults. Check that the materials are available and confirm the latest information about the trail before your visit.
A Yew Tree on Rue du Colonel Bertin
A yew tree (Taxus baccata) stands on Rue du Colonel Bertin. The tree is listed as 7 metres tall, 45 centimetres in diameter and an estimated 85 years old. It adds a specific botanical point of interest to Docelles’ paper history and trails. The measurements and estimated age may change.
