Saint-Avold brings together several distinct themes for planning a trip: the history of Saint-Nabor Abbey and other religious buildings, the American Military Cemetery, hiking trails and leisure activities. This lets you choose whether to focus your stay on architectural and religious history, nature or active leisure pursuits.

Saint-Nabor Abbey: History and Art

Saint-Nabor Abbey was founded in 722; the relics of Saint Nabor were laid to rest there in 765. These dates mark two separate events: the founding of the abbey and the later deposition of the relics. The abbey church’s choir houses the work “Christ on the Cross.” The church also has a French Neoclassical-style organ, built by Barthélémy Chevreux in 1770–1771. The abbey’s long history is thus presented alongside specific details about a work of art and an instrument.

Two Chapels with Their Own Architectural History

The Chapelle Sainte-Croix dates from the late 15th century, is in the Flamboyant Gothic style and is classified as a historic monument. Below the chapel is a Stations of the Cross dating from the 17th century. The chapel and the Stations of the Cross are therefore distinct both in location and period: the chapel dates from the late Middle Ages, while the Stations belong to a later century.

The Chapelle des comtes de Créhange is also in the Flamboyant Gothic style. It was built around 1570 in the former Maison Libre of the Counts of Créhange. The two chapels share a stylistic connection, but differ in date and historical setting: Sainte-Croix dates from the late 15th century, while Créhange dates from around 1570. The Chapelle des comtes de Créhange can be visited independently free of charge; guided tours are available on request.

American Military Cemetery

The American Military Cemetery covers 113.5 acres and is considered the largest American military cemetery from the Second World War in Europe. A viewpoint on the cemetery’s eastern hill offers views across the entire site and the landscape to the west. The cemetery is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is free. Check the opening hours before you travel so your visit fits within the stated time window.

Hiking Trails and Leisure Activities

The wooded massif of Saint-Avold also has numerous hiking trails. This makes the landscape a distinct focus for trip planning alongside the architectural and historical attractions. The trails offer a different way to explore Saint-Avold than visiting individual buildings and memorial sites.

The Complexe nautique de la Communauté d’Agglomération Saint-Avold Synergie has indoor pools. It offers dedicated times for older people and pregnant women, as well as lanes for experienced swimmers and for finswimming and swimming lessons. The facilities therefore cater to different activities and groups. If you plan to visit the pool, check the current times in advance.

Coco Park in Saint-Avold offers 3,000 m² of carousels and other rides, go-karting, trampolines, slides and mazes for children aged 0 to 12. The age range gives families a specific point of reference when deciding whether to include this leisure activity in their plans. Unlike the religious buildings and cemetery, Coco Park is focused on active recreation.
