Montbronn: Crystal Craftsmanship, Village History and Green Landscapes
Accommodation in Montbronn
Montbronn combines a very green landscape with the history of its chapels and church, traditional crystal craftsmanship and a fishing lake that is accessible seasonally. When planning a hotel stay, you can consider the destination from different perspectives: its architectural history offers specific dates, Cristallerie Ferstler Fischer showcases hand-cutting and demonstrations, and the Étang de pêche du Soleil has a limited fishing season. The annual Waldifescht is also part of the picture. You can weigh up which of these facets matters most to you in light of your travel dates and interests.
A green village character
Built-up areas and orchards alternate within and around the village of Montbronn. Its very green landscape gives the place the character of a garden village. This is a distinctive facet to consider when choosing a destination, alongside its individual sights: the village scenery brings settlement and gardens together. Montbronn can therefore be described both through its architectural history and its landscape.
Chapels, church and local history
The Chapelle de la-Trinité was built in 1825. It was relocated in the 1970s to make way for the widening of the road. These two dates refer to different stages in its history: 1825 marks its construction, while the relocation took place much later. The chapel was funded by the heirs of millers Peter Bach and Elisabeth Eichert. They had it built in gratitude for having been spared during the Revolution, even though they had provided for the priest Jean Salzmann, who was hiding near their mill.
The parish church of Saint-Georges was rebuilt in 1896 in the Neo-Romanesque style and designed by R. Jacquemin, an architect from Metz. The year marks the church’s reconstruction and should be distinguished from the construction date of the Chapelle de la-Trinité. Calvaire 15 also has its own history: it was erected by the widow of Joseph Strasser, who died in 1908 at the age of 31. Monsieur Jung and the Amis de la Chapelle renovated it in 2011. At these sites, the dates of construction, subsequent relocation, reconstruction and renovation can be clearly distinguished.
Crystal craftsmanship in Montbronn
Cristallerie Ferstler Fischer was founded in 1953 by Monsieur Ferstler Joseph and continues to preserve the hand-cutting tradition of earlier glass-finishing masters. Demonstrations of crystal cutting are offered on site. Visitors can also enjoy a free workshop visit and an older collection of Lorraine crystal manufacturers dating from before 1999. Check the specific visitor arrangements before your trip. The craft tradition, demonstrations and collection offer different ways to explore crystal: the continuation of the cutting technique, its practical demonstration and the historic collection.
Fishing at the Étang de pêche du Soleil
The Étang de pêche du Soleil lies between Rahling and Montbronn. The lake is open for fishing only on Sundays, from the Sunday after Easter until the last Sunday in September. The pond contains trout, carp, tench, perch and roach. The season and day of the week are key to planning: schedule fishing only within this period and on a Sunday, and check access information before setting off.
Waldifescht and woodruff specialities
The traditional Waldifescht takes place every year at the Parcours de Santé in Montbronn. Specialities made with woodruff are sampled there; the French name for the herb is aspérule. Woodruff is therefore a feature of the festival. If you are planning your trip around it, check the specific event date and programme: individual tastings and programme items may vary.
