Rohrbach-Lès-Bitche: Fort Casso, Saint-Rémi and leisure activities
Accommodation in Rohrbach-Lès-Bitche
In Rohrbach-Lès-Bitche, a range of interests take centre stage: the military history of Fort Casso, the architectural history of the parish church of Saint-Rémi, and opportunities for swimming, wellness and exercise. The Marché du Jeudi Matin and La Rohrbachoise are also among the things to explore during a stay.
Fort Casso: the Maginot Line underground
Fort Casso is an infantry fortification on the Maginot Line. A guided tour takes you 25 metres underground. The facilities include a power station, a kitchen, troop accommodation and a telephone exchange. The tour therefore covers technical facilities as well as spaces for daily life and communication. During the visit, visitors can also bring a 135-tonne gun turret into its combat position. This hands-on experience adds a practical element to the tour of the fort's facilities.
Outside the fort, a footpath connects the entrance block with the combat blocks. It offers a different perspective on the site from the guided tour underground: here, the focus is on the connections between the blocks and the route outdoors.
Church of Saint-Rémi: construction and later decoration
The parish church of Saint-Rémi represents another aspect of the town's history. It was built in 1772 to plans by Jean-Baptiste Henrion. In 1894, the nave and choir were decorated with plaster and stucco. To understand the building's history, it is important to distinguish between the two dates: 1772 refers to its construction to Henrion's plans, while 1894 refers to the later decoration of the nave and choir.
Swimming, classes and wellness
The Centre aquatique communautaire brings together a range of swimming and wellness facilities. The 25-metre swimming pool has five lanes. There is also a two-lane teaching pool, a massage area and a paddling pool. Other activities include aquagym, aquabike, and swimming and triathlon clubs. Antenatal classes and aqua birthday parties are also available. The wellness area includes a sauna, hammam, whirlpool, massage showers and a relaxation area. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between swimming facilities, classes and clubs, and wellness, rather than treating these different offerings as one and the same activity.
Market and route: a comparison
The Marché du Jeudi Matin features a Lorraine rotisserie selling roast chicken. Check before your visit whether the vendor is currently listed as part of the market.
La Rohrbachoise is an easier, family-friendly route. It is accessible to bicycles, pushchairs and people with reduced mobility, and does not go through Fort Casso. The 2026 edition is being promoted; check the event details before your trip. When choosing a route, it is also useful to note the difference from the footpath at the fort: La Rohrbachoise does not go through Fort Casso, while the footpath outside the fort connects the entrance block with the combat blocks.
