Meisenthal: Glass Art and Culture
Accommodation in Meisenthal
Meisenthal has a strong focus on glass art and glassmaking history. It also offers a distinctive cultural programme, a walking trail and karting. During your stay, you can combine a range of interests.
Glassmaking and its history
At the Centre International d’Art Verrier (CIAV), you can watch glassblowers at work from the mezzanine; they comment on what they are doing. The centre preserves, reinterprets and shares centuries-old glassmaking know-how, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The boutique sells pieces designed by contemporary designers and made by glassblowers in Meisenthal. Here, craftsmanship and contemporary design come together.
The Musée du Verre displays exceptional works made in Meisenthal, most of them inspired by nature. The museum also conveys the local memory of glassmaking. On display is the hearth of the first furnace at the Meisenthal glassworks, built from 1704 onwards. The history of glassmaking can therefore be explored through both the works on display and a tangible record of the early glassworks.
Culture at the Halle Verrière
The Halle Verrière is located in the former production building of the Meisenthal glassworks. Today, it is a venue for multidisciplinary cultural creation and education. Throughout the year, the Halle offers tours of the site and a look behind the scenes of an event venue.
The annual programme includes the Demandez-Nous la Lune! street theatre festival, the Il été une fois… touring festival and the Wowox children’s festival. It also features contemporary music concerts under the Rock à l’Usine label, with capacity for up to 3,000 people, as well as contemporary art exhibitions. If a particular festival or concert is the main reason for your trip, check the event dates before finalising your plans.
Walking trail and karting
The permanent Circuit permanent du Mondfänger walking trail starts at Place Robert Schuman in Meisenthal. You can choose between 10 km and 20 km routes. The trail runs mostly through the forest while also passing close to the emblematic Site verrier de Meisenthal. The two distances offer a practical basis for planning your day. As trail markers and conditions may change, check them before setting out.
For a different activity, try Karting de Meisenthal: the track is 750 metres long and 7.20 metres wide. It is located in a wooded valley surrounded by dense forest in the Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord. Karting is available by advance reservation. The leisure options therefore offer different experiences: a route whose distance you can choose, or a karting track with specified dimensions and a reservation requirement.
