Maizières-Les-Vic offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: architectural history, nature and a section of the Véloroute V52. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether you are more interested in architecture, the ponds or an active stage. For an active stage, the Véloroute V52 offers a specific point of reference.

Architectural history in several stages

The Church of Saint-Michel was rebuilt from 1736 onward. The nave and choir were completed in 1737; the bell tower was built from 1739 onward, and its spire was completed in 1756. The dates indicate different construction phases: the church’s central areas were finished before work on the tower was complete.

The former synagogue was built to plans by architect Ferdinand Boudot between 1868 and 1872 and inaugurated in 1872. It is considered the last testament to a long Jewish presence in the canton of Vic-sur-Seille. The Holy Ark was listed as a historic monument on May 18, 2009, and the former synagogue as a whole on March 28, 2012. These dates record the protection of two separate areas.

The residence of the former Château de Maizières-lès-Vic also features architectural details: the square building is roofed with beaver-tail shingles, a roofing style that has become rare in the canton. The house appears to date from the early 18th century and was recently restored to its original layout. At the Hellocourt estate, the present-day buildings were constructed between 1890 and 1894; they are said to be an early work by Karlsruhe architect Hermann Billing (1867–1946). Industrially manufactured cast iron and brick, the decorative design and functional planning make the estate an exceptional ensemble.

Ponds and designated natural areas

Maizières-lès-Vic is part of the Parc naturel régional de Lorraine. The type 1 ZNIEFF area “Étang de Brihoff à Maizières-lès-Vic” covers 10 hectares. The municipality also has four type 1 ZNIEFF areas and one type 2 area. Étang de Laixière is designated as a biodiversity reservoir to be preserved. Check the current official boundaries of the designated areas when planning a specific nature outing.

Marsh harriers, purple herons, numerous amphibians and bats can be found at the Laixière and Brihoff ponds. There is also remarkable flora and populations of the mollusc Vertigo de Moulin; this species is listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive. Species presence may vary by season. The ponds are therefore also of ecological interest in the area, while the V52 offers another, clearly defined option for planning a trip.
