Saint-Agnant-de-Versillat can be explored through a range of interests: walking and mountain biking circuits, landscapes along the Sédelle, a botanical garden and historic buildings. Depending on whether you are more interested in a tour, nature or architecture, these places offer different focal points for your stay.

Hiking and Cycling

The Circuit pédestre n° 6 – La Faille des Trois Provinces is an 8.4-kilometre circular route. The walk takes approximately two hours and 30 minutes, and the route is rated moderate. It leads from the Sédelle Valley into the Chaudron Valley and over the hills that form the geological fault line of the Marche Fault. The tour thus combines specific route details with a route through valleys and over hills. Check the latest route information before setting out, as details may change.

For mountain bikers, the Circuit VTT n° 18 – Le tour de Versillat covers 27.9 kilometres and is also rated moderate. The route reaches the Sédelle Valley via the GR654 and the Way of St James; it also crosses the Way of St James several times. Compared with the two circular routes, the hiking route is shorter and has an estimated duration, while the mountain biking circuit covers a longer distance. This lets you compare the distances and activities without treating the two tours as equivalent.

Landscape and Nature

Along the Sédelle lies Peu de Châtelus, a low hill with steep slopes above the river. It belongs to a group of «peus» that mark the beginning of a significant geological fault there. The landscape can therefore be viewed from different perspectives: the hiking route crosses hills between two valleys, while Peu de Châtelus is a single hill beside the river.

Below Saint-Agnant-de-Versillat, in a small valley, lies Artbotanic, a botanical garden covering three hectares. Its collection includes 1,000 trees and shrubs, more than 4,000 perennials and 88 rose bushes. The numbers of plants may change as the collection develops. Architecture and Local History

The Église Saint-Agnan has a single nave and comprises two bays with ribbed and lierne vaults. Foliage, tendrils and birds adorn the vaults. The bell tower porch dates from the 13th century; the former portal between the vestibule and nave, dating from the 12th century, has capitals. The church has been protected as a historic monument under a registration order dated 8 May 1933. Its architectural form, vault decoration and building elements from different periods offer several specific points of interest when viewing the building.

Another historic building is the Lanterne des morts de Versillat, which probably dates from the late 12th century. It consists of a hollow hexagonal column and a pyramidal roof with eight round-arched openings. Its history is also linked to changes to the cemetery: when the former cemetery next to the church was relocated, the lantern was reassembled at the present cemetery in 1869. The church and the lantern have different architectural forms and each tells a distinct part of the town’s history.
