Saint-Bard brings together religious heritage, local traditions and opportunities to spend time outdoors. The Église Saint-Blaise, the Promenade des Peintres, a walk by the pond and a possible farm visit offer different highlights. You can tailor your plans to your interests, from religious history to a walk or mountain bike ride.

Church and religious traditions

The Église Saint-Blaise was partially listed as a historic monument on 20 December 1973. Its patron saints are Saint Blaise and Sainte Marguerite d’Antioche. The “saint-vinage” is still blessed on 3 February to protect the herds. In the past, processions also went to the respective fountains bearing the same names on 3 February, the feast of Saint Blaise, and 20 July, the feast of Sainte Marguerite.

The church doors are said to be opened only in fine weather to protect the interior from damp. If you would like to see inside the church, it may be helpful to confirm locally in advance whether a visit is possible. The patron saints, the different procession traditions and the partial historic-monument listing each give the religious heritage its own significance.

Explore on foot or by mountain bike

The Promenade des Peintres is an easy 4.4-kilometre circular hiking route. It is listed as taking 1 hour 30 minutes and has a positive elevation gain of 112 metres. The route passes through Saint-Bard and is also suitable for mountain bikes. Its stated distance, duration and elevation gain give you practical points of reference for planning your day. Its suitability for mountain bikes also means that it can be enjoyed by more than just walkers.

At the Etang de la Prairie, you can walk along the pond. This offers a different focus from the Promenade des Peintres: there, the emphasis is on a circular route with specific distance, duration and elevation details; here, it is a walk by the water. If you are planning outdoor activities, you can choose between a route with stated figures and a stroll along the shore.

Château and farm visit

The Château de Chazelpaud and its outbuildings were built on the estate in the 1910s by the architect R.S. Des Reynaud. It offers a different perspective on the area’s heritage from the church: the château is defined by its construction period and architect, while the Église Saint-Blaise is notable for its patron saints, procession traditions and partial historic-monument listing.

A guided tour is available at La Ferme de Muriel et Xavier, where visitors can also get close to the animals. A visit may require arranging in advance, so it is worth planning this stop accordingly. The farm raises Limousine cattle. Its agricultural focus complements Saint-Bard’s religious and architectural heritage with a glimpse of local livestock farming, making it an interesting stop if you are interested in agriculture as well as culture.
