If you’re looking for a hotel in Mérinchal, you can plan your trip around two local themes: architectural history and hiking and cycling routes. The historic buildings span several centuries, while the routes have specific distances, stages and characteristics. These themes can be considered separately: you might focus on architectural history or structure your time around your planned activity.

Architectural history in Mérinchal

The Château de la Mothe was built in the 12th century. In the 15th century, a pentagonal corner tower with a spiral staircase was added. The information distinguishes the medieval origins from a later addition, revealing several phases of construction. The château was also surrounded by a moat, which was later filled in. If you’re interested in historic architecture, you’ll find both a dated structural feature and a change to the original layout here.

The Église du bourg dates from the 14th century; its bell tower and roof were renovated in 1755. The church has a northern chapel called Villelume and a southern chapel called La Mothe. The compass directions help distinguish the two chapels, while the dates refer to different points in time: the church’s origins and later work on its bell tower and roof.

The Chapelle du Calvaire was built in the 19th century. It replaced an older, dilapidated building that was dependent on the Château de la Mothe. Its history can therefore also be understood as the replacement of an earlier structure.

Spring, hiking trails and cycling tour

The Source du Cher is 1 km west of Mérinchal. It is freely accessible and can be visited year-round; check current conditions before your visit. The GR® 41 Vallée du Cher passes the source of the Cher at Mérinchal. Its 62 km section in Creuse can be hiked in three or four stages. The number of stages refers to this longer section. If you’re planning to hike it, also check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another hiking option is Par Monts et Par Vergnes. It is one of four marked hiking trails in the municipality of Mérinchal and is among the first three to be included in the Plan Départemental des Itinéraires de Promenade et de Randonnée (PDIPR). Check the current route before setting out, as route details can change.

For cycling, the Boucle locale 40 is a different kind of tour: it is 17 km long and starts at the Château de la Mothe. The route follows the hilly roads of Mérinchal. On a clear day, the nearby volcanoes of the Auvergne can be seen from there. The figures represent two different planning scales: the GR® 41 is a 62 km hiking section with three or four stages, while the Boucle locale 40 is a 17 km cycling tour. This makes it possible to compare the options by activity and distance without treating them as equivalent tours.
