Ajain: Heritage, Hiking and Cycling
Accommodation in Ajain
Ajain offers a range of options for a stay combining heritage and outdoor activities. The Église de l’Assomption-de-la-Vierge and local minor heritage sit alongside a hiking trail and a mountain biking route, giving you different themes to consider when planning your trip.
Heritage in Ajain
The Église de l’Assomption-de-la-Vierge dates from the late 13th century and is a complete example of a fortified church. It was designated a Monument historique by decree on 26 December 1930. The two dates refer to different aspects: the late 13th century indicates the church’s origins, while 1930 marks its official designation. If you are interested in architecture and local history, this provides a clearly defined focus for planning your trip.
The Chapelle de Bonnefond is part of Ajain’s centuries-old heritage. At the Moulin du Creuzet, the grain mill and its waterwheel are part of the local heritage. The chapel broadens the picture of religious heritage, while the mill offers a different perspective. Together with the fortified church, these sites offer different ways to explore Ajain’s history.
The interactive map on ajain.fr covers all of Ajain’s local minor heritage. An exhibition on local minor heritage is located in the town hall’s entrance hall and stairwell. If you would like to visit the exhibition, confirm access arrangements in advance. The map and exhibition offer two different ways to explore minor heritage: one provides an overview, while the other can be seen at the town hall.
Hiking trail and mountain biking route
The Circuit de randonnée pédestre n° 1 Le Grand Bois starts in Ajain. The hiking trail is 12.6 km long, rated easy, and has a total positive elevation gain of 176 m. Its length, elevation gain and difficulty rating provide different points of reference for assessing the scope of the hike. However, the route is not consistently even: a steep descent leads towards Étang de Champroy. The pond is private. Take this section into account when planning and check current trail conditions before setting out.
There is also a mountain biking route, the Circuit VTT n° 21 Le Grand Bois. It initially follows wide tracks and small roads, then continues along forest paths through the Bois de l’Hospice and the Grand Bois. When choosing between the two activities, the information provided differs: for the hiking trail, the length, elevation gain and difficulty rating are given; for the mountain biking route, the sequence of path types and the named woodland areas are described.
