Saint-Privat: Markets, Hiking Trails and Chapels
Accommodation in Saint-Privat
Saint-Privat combines seasonal markets with hiking trails, protected heritage and a wooded lakeside area. Two different themes can help you plan your stay: would you like to experience local produce and market life, or are trails, chapels and scenery your main focus? The Marchés des Producteurs de Pays bring Saint-Privat to life in July and August. The trails and the bas-relief in the parish church offer further ways to shape your stay.
Markets and local produce
The Marchés des Producteurs de Pays offer local fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, bread and preserves. Held outdoors, the markets bring producers and consumers directly together. On Tuesdays, visitors can eat on site; the programme also includes musical and festive events. Seasonal details may change, so it is worth checking the dates and current programme in advance.
Another market date is the Marché du Vendredi: it takes place on Friday mornings and brings together local producers who sell regional products directly. This gives you two different market experiences to choose from: the Marchés des Producteurs de Pays bring market stalls and an accompanying programme to Saint-Privat in July and August, while the Marché du Vendredi offers a weekly morning market. Market hours may change on public holidays, so check the date if you are planning your stay around a market visit.
Hiking trails, scenery and chapels
The Sentier de La Chapelle d’Artiges is an easy, 11.6-kilometre circular trail marked in yellow and included in the PDIPR. It leads to the restored Chapelle d’Artiges and back to Saint-Privat. Along the way, it crosses a semi-open plateau with birch and oak trees and increasingly rare chestnut groves; it also offers a view of the Puy du Bassin. The trail therefore combines a defined circular route with scenery and a specific destination. As trail details are occasionally updated, it is advisable to briefly check the route information before setting out.
The Sentier du Chemin des Écoliers offers a different focus: visitors discover the characteristic architecture of the Xaintrie, as well as chapels and crosses. In contrast, the Sentier de La Chapelle d’Artiges is described in more detail, with its length, circular route and trail markings, and leads to a specific restored chapel. If you would like to focus on culture and architecture, the Chemin des Écoliers addresses these themes directly; the route to the Chapelle d’Artiges combines them with a named landscape route and viewpoint.
Heritage and places of interest
The parish church of Saint-Privat contains the bas-relief “La Cène.” It was classified as a protected object on 15 January 1970. The relief adds a specific work in the village to the chapels and crosses along the trails. For a stay focused on local heritage, you can combine different themes: architecture and religious buildings on the Sentier du Chemin des Écoliers, the restored Chapelle d’Artiges as the destination of the circular trail, and the classified bas-relief in the parish church.
Lakeside setting and activities in the Xaintrie
The Plan d’eau des Chanaux is in the heart of Saint-Privat. Its lakeside setting is described as peaceful and surrounded by woodland; trout fishing is possible at the lake. Check local fishing access rules before you travel. This makes the lake a different kind of destination from the hiking trails: here, the focus is on the wooded lakeside and fishing, while the trails explore the scenery, architecture or chapels.
Horse-related activities are also part of the regional offering. The Centre Équestre de Malesse offers introductory lessons, games, dressage, show jumping, trail rides, bivouacs and horse boarding. The horses ride in a green setting with trails in the Xaintrie region. Ask about available activities and horse-boarding options before your visit. This will help you distinguish these offerings from the hiking trails described above and plan your stay around the things that interest you.
