Vinça brings together cultural history, activities at Lac des Escoumes and a range of outdoor pursuits. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on church art and historic gates, seasonal swimming, fishing, hiking or cycling. The sites and activities offer different highlights, from the furnishings of the parish church to a long cycling circuit rated as difficult.

Church art and historic gates

The parish church of Saint-Julien-et-Sainte-Baselisse was classified as a historic monument by decree on 27 January 1987. It was rebuilt in the 18th century: the foundation stone was laid in 1734, and construction was completed in 1769. The church contains eleven altarpieces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its construction history and furnishings thus reflect different periods.

The protected Retable du Christ is located in the chapel beneath the bell tower. It includes a crucifix with Mary Magdalene, four medallions depicting scenes from the Passion, and a representation of God the Father. The church also has an organ built by Cavallié-Coll. Concerts are held there today; the concert programme may vary.

Another trace of the past is the chapel of Saint-Sébastien at the former hospital. It dates from the 16th century and contains an altarpiece of Saint Sebastian, a 13th-century statue of the Virgin Mary and another from the 18th century. There is also a 17th-century figure of Christ and a 17th-century wooden bas-relief.

Two surviving gates also point to Vinça’s history: the Porte du Barri was built in 1245, while the Porte de Marcevol dates from 1330. These dates offer a concrete comparison with the parish church’s later buildings and artworks. Together, the church, chapel and gates provide different historical points of reference for exploring the town.

Water, leisure and fishing

There is a public beach at Lac des Escoumes. Beach facilities are subject to seasonal schedules, and swimming is also offered seasonally. Leisure facilities include water games, children’s play areas and stand-up paddleboard rentals. Availability may vary by season. If spending time by the water is important to your plans, take these seasonal conditions into account.

In addition to its leisure facilities, Lac des Escoumes has its own fishing profile: the water is classified as a second-category fishing area and carries the “Passion Pêche” label. At the water near the Barrage de Vinça, there is also a night carp fishing stretch and an area for float-tube fishing. Fishing rules and access conditions may change; check the current conditions locally or before you go fishing.

The water near the Barrage de Vinça is also a place for walks and a starting point for visiting the Chapelle de Bell Lloc or the dam’s industrial structure. So fishing is not the only interest here. Check local access conditions before planning an outing.

Hiking and cycling circuit

The Tour de la Baronnie starts and ends at the Lac des Escoumes car park. It is an easy, 13.4-kilometre circular family walk that takes about four hours. The route passes through villages and orchards, with panoramic views over the valley in the Bas-Conflent landscape. Following a fire, access is prohibited until further notice under a municipal order. Check the current status before planning your hike.

“Sur les hauteurs de Palomeres” offers a different scale: this difficult cycling circuit is 83 kilometres long and starts in Vinça. Distance and difficulty are key when comparing the two routes; the Tour de la Baronnie is also subject to the current access closure. Check route conditions before setting off on the cycling circuit.

Wine experiences in Vinça

Les Vignerons en Terres Plurielles in Vinça offers wine-tasting courses and introductory workshops, including free workshops for adults and children. Dates may change; check the schedule if you would like to include a workshop in your trip. This adds another specific interest to your itinerary, whether your plans are focused primarily on cultural heritage, water activities or tours.
