Villefort: Lac de Villefort, Via Ferrata and Heritage
Accommodation in Villefort
Lac de Villefort, the via ferrata and the buildings in and around Villefort offer different ways to spend your stay: water, activity and heritage. For your planning, you can consider these themes separately and choose what to focus on according to your interests.
Lake, beach and water sports
Lac de Villefort covers 137 hectares of water. The lake has a sandy beach and a swimming area supervised in summer. If supervision is important to your plans, check the seasonal arrangements before your visit.
Kayaking and windsurfing are available at the lake; operations may vary by season. This means you can choose between water sports on the lake and spending time on the sandy beach.
Route around Lac de Villefort
The route around Lac de Villefort passes over the dam, which was inaugurated in 1964. From Villefort, the route is about five minutes away via the D 906; travel time may vary depending on the route and conditions.
Via ferrata above the lake
The Lac de Villefort via ferrata runs above the lake and offers two routes: an easy one and a difficult one. These difficulty levels provide an initial guide when choosing a route. The high-adventure features include a footbridge, a Nepalese bridge and a zip line. If you plan to try the via ferrata, check access conditions before your visit, as they may vary.
Churches and architectural history
The Eglise Saint-Victorin de Villefort is a parish church with a unified neoclassical design. It has twelve large figurative stained-glass windows. The windows depict the lives of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph and are the work of stained-glass artist Louis-Victor Gesta. Two aspects stand out here: the overall design of the church and the subjects depicted in its stained glass.
The Chapelle Saint-Loup in Villefort was demolished in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1621. It is also a 360-degree viewpoint from which to photograph natural and cultural heritage. Its architectural history and viewpoint offer a different focus from the church, with its neoclassical design and stained-glass windows.
Routes and heritage in the surrounding area
The Chemin de Régordane passes through Villefort. Nearby, in La Garde-Guérin in the commune of Prévenchères, is the fortified medieval town of La Garde-Guérin. It lies on the Chemin de Régordane, above the Chassezac Gorges.
The Manse of Château de Castanet is in Pourcharesses. It dates back to the 13th century, though it may be older. Another regional feature is the clèdes and bancels: they stand as evidence of the work carried out by people in the Cévennes over the past century. This perspective on work in the cultural landscape complements the architectural history of the churches and the medieval town.
