Grandrieu combines local history with attractions centred on water, a mill and mountain scenery. The places to visit offer different experiences for planning your trip: the Plan d'eau is very close to the town centre, while Roc de Fenestre is a summit at 1,486 metres. There is also a Romanesque church with a priory, a chapel by a spring and tours of a watermill. If you are looking for a hotel in Grandrieu, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip—from churches and traditions to milling or scenery.

Churches, a spring and the townscape

Grandrieu is built on a rocky promontory between the ru des Mèdes stream and the Grand Rieu. A so-called Roman bridge crosses the Grand Rieu. The streams, rocky promontory and bridge provide distinctive landmarks in the townscape.

The Église Saint-Martin is a Romanesque church with a priory. It is open to the public all year round, with free admission; check access information locally before your visit. The Chapelle Saint Méen was built by a spring in 1871. According to popular religious belief, the spring was thought to have healing properties for certain ailments. This belief should be understood as a historical religious tradition, not as medical advice.

The Plan d'eau near the town centre

The Plan d'eau de Grandrieu is very close to the town centre and has a grassy area, shade and toilets. Check local visiting conditions and facilities before you arrive.

Moulin des Deux Rieu: mill and tours

Moulin des Deux Rieu is a watermill built in the 18th century and restored faithfully to its original form. Local grain is traditionally milled there into flour using millstones. Its history and production offer two perspectives on the same place: the historic mill and the traditional craft of milling.

Individual, group and educational tours are available and last about an hour on average. You can allow for this approximate average when planning your time. Arrange the details of your visit in advance.

Roc de Fenestre and the forest loop

Roc de Fenestre stands at an altitude of 1,486 metres amid a granite rock formation and offers a remarkable 360-degree panorama. Views include Mont Blanc, Mont Gerbier de Jonc, Mézenc, Plomb du Cantal and Mont-Lozère; there is an orientation table at the summit. The summit can be reached on foot, as no paved road goes all the way there. The Cœur Margeride Tourist Office offers topoguides and various discovery hikes. Check route conditions and the availability of topoguides in advance.

Another specific route option is the Forêt de Villedieu expedition—Trail No. 34: it extends Route 33 with an 8-kilometre loop through the Villedieu forest at an altitude of almost 1,500 metres. Check conditions and trail markings before hiking this route. The two scenic destinations offer different experiences: Roc de Fenestre focuses on the summit and panorama, while Trail No. 34 is defined by its loop length and extension of Route 33. This can help you decide whether you are more interested in the summit views or the described forest loop.
