Saint-Siffret combines an old village centre built on rock with Romanesque architecture, historic buildings and the surrounding garrigue. Visitors wishing to plan their stay around specific cultural and landscape themes will find a range of points of interest here, from houses with rooms carved into the rock to an annual art event.

Rock Architecture and the Village Centre

The houses in Saint-Siffret’s old village centre were built directly on the rock. Some old houses also contain troglodytic rooms carved directly into the rock. These two features complement one another but describe different things: in the village centre, the rock shapes the way the houses were built; in the troglodytic rooms, it is itself part of the interior.

The Romanesque church also has distinctive architectural details. Its nave has a barrel vault, and its apse is semicircular in shape. A barrel vault extends lengthwise over the nave, while the apse, with its half-dome shape, forms a distinct end. The church is dated to the late 12th century.

Quarry Traces and Historic Buildings

Traces of an old quarry, where building stone was extracted, can be seen on Chemin de l’écolier. This makes the use of stone in the village tangible in a different way from the rock construction of the village centre: here, the focus is on extracting material; there, on using it in architecture.

La Commanderie has a small fortified gate dating from the 12th century. The Domaine de Moulin Neuf includes a mill of medieval origin, which has been mentioned since the 16th century. Part of the estate is protected as a historic monument. The Château de Moulin-Neuf is privately owned and closed to the public. Check this access information locally again before planning a visit.

Art & Patrimoine in the Old Village

The Art & Patrimoine festival takes place every year in the historic old village of Saint-Siffret. During the festival, gardens, courtyards and unusual places in the village become art galleries. The programme also includes free heritage tours. Art and the village’s historic sites are thus brought together at the heart of the event.

The gardens, courtyards and other unusual places included may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition in advance.

Garrigue and Mountain Bike Trail

The garrigue forms the natural setting of the village of Saint-Siffret. The Les Lembertes mountain bike trail offers another perspective on the area: it passes through the old village and by restored heritage sites. Above Saint-Siffret, it follows the landscape and offers views of the plain and the Cévennes. The route therefore combines local history with views across the landscape.

Information about Les Lembertes covers both the route through the old village and the viewpoints above the village. Route details may change, so check the latest description before setting out.

Horse Rides and Tastings

Le Centaure d’Uzès offers horse rides and carriage rides in Saint-Siffret. Children aged three and over can take part in pony rides, games and activities there. If you plan to enjoy these offerings, check the current programme and booking details in advance, as they may change.

Domaine Reynaud practises organic farming and offers product tastings. Agricultural themes thus add to the options for travellers who would like to include local produce and tastings in their plans, alongside village architecture and heritage.
