Saint-Alexandre brings together village history, Romanesque buildings and wine country. A circular walk with a set distance and approximate duration is also among the activities described. If you’re looking for hotels in Saint-Alexandre, these different highlights can help you plan your stay around your interests: local history, a hike or wine visits.

Cultural History and Architecture

The Chapelle Saint-Joseph was built in 1840. The Romanesque church of Saint-Alexandre dates from the 12th century and has three naves, an apsidal dome and a cupola. Its façade features a terracotta statue of Saint Alexander, the village’s patron saint. The architectural features and statue offer different points of interest if you’re interested in the area’s architecture and history.

The bell tower also tells of later changes: the current tower dates from 1978. The previous tower was struck by lightning in 1964; the bell tower was subsequently rebuilt. The Chapelle de la Vierge was formerly the castle chapel and now serves as Saint-Alexandre’s town hall. It houses a Renaissance-style gilded statue of the Virgin Mary carved from fig wood. It was rescued during the unrest and hidden in what is known as the false roof.

The Château of Saint-Alexandre served as a defensive stronghold and a local seat of power. The noble family lived there until the Revolution. Together with the former castle chapel and the town hall, the château reflects the buildings’ different historical uses in the village.

On Foot and by Bike

The “Sentier entre village et vignobles” combines the discovery of rural heritage with a walk through the vineyards. The moderately difficult circular route is 8.1 kilometres long and takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Saint-Alexandre, on Rue des Lierres. The distance and approximate duration give you a concrete basis for planning this route. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

Another option is the “Boucle cyclo-découverte la Spiripontaine” cycling loop. It heads towards the village of St-Alexandre, where a stop is recommended. While the hiking trail is described as a circular route through the vineyards, the cycling route highlights Saint-Alexandre as a recommended stop along the way. Check the road conditions before your ride, too.

Wine at the Heart of the Experience

Terra 6840 is a winery in Saint-Alexandre and sells AOC CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne wines directly from the estate. Guided vineyard tours give visitors an insight into the winemaking process; these tours require a reservation. The products available and visit arrangements may change. Check in advance which tours or sales will be available during your visit.

Terra 6840 also offers private wine tastings by arrangement at its vineyard in the Gard département. This makes it possible to distinguish between the guided tour in Saint-Alexandre and the wine tasting as separate experiences. If wine-growing is an important part of your travel plans, consider which type of visit suits your plans and what arrangements are required.

Landscape and Protected Areas

Saint-Alexandre lies on a rounded hill with gentle slopes. The village has a circular layout and a historic centre with narrow lanes. Alongside the buildings and vineyards described above, these features give the village its distinctive landscape and architectural setting.

Saint-Alexandre is one of the municipalities in the Natura 2000 bird protection area “Marais de l'Ile Vieille et alentour”. The municipality is also part of the continental ZNIEFF Type 2 area “Le Rhône et ses canaux”. This area is classified under the 1930 law and designated as a bird protection area under the Birds Directive. Together with the hilltop setting and vineyards, these details add another perspective on the destination, alongside its local history and hiking.
