Massillargues-Attuech combines a vineyard landscape with wine tastings, historic architecture and traditional pottery. The commune comprises the three hamlets of Atuech or Attuech, Massillargues and St-Roman.

Vineyard Landscapes and Routes

The plain is characterised by vineyards. St-Roman lies on a hill, overlooking the plain on one side and the hills of the hinterland on the other. The plain and the higher-lying hamlet thus offer contrasting landscape perspectives.

One route through this landscape is the “Balade sur le terroir IGP Cévennes”. It passes through vineyards in the IGP Cévennes area and along the banks of the Gardon. An audio guide is available for the route through the Latitude Gard smartphone app, which you can download from the App Store or Google Play. The route also offers the chance to spot beavers.

The “Cyclo - Balade Vigneronne” bike tour offers a different perspective on the routes. It follows paths through the picturesque vineyards of the Cévennes and passes through Attuech and Massillargues-Attuech. The “Balade sur le terroir IGP Cévennes” is described in terms of its vineyards and the banks of the Gardon; the bike tour also names the places it passes through. This makes it possible to distinguish the two routes by their different focuses.

Wine and Visitor Experiences

The Les Vignerons de la porte des Cévennes wine shop in Massillargues offers product tastings and free tours. Les Vignerons de la porte des Cévennes offers IGP wines from the Cévennes, AOP Duché d’Uzès wines, white and red Cartagène wine, sparkling wine and organic wines. Wine is therefore part of the experience both in the landscapes along the routes and through the wine shop’s visitor offerings.

Castle History and Architecture

The Château de Massillargues dates from the 18th century; its oldest part dates from the 12th century. It stands on a small hill above the Gardon plain, with views of the Cévennes and Mont Ventoux. The château is private and cannot be visited.

The construction of old houses is also part of the area’s history: many old houses in Massillargues-Attuech were built from stone and pebbles from the Gardon. Alongside the history of the château, this architectural detail provides another tangible connection to local building traditions.

Traditional Pottery Craft

Poterie Terre Figuière makes the Vase d’Anduze and a wide range of other traditionally made products in its workshops in Massillargues. In 2010, Poterie Terre Figuière received the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (EPV) award. The Vase d’Anduze and the award illustrate two aspects of this craft: a traditionally made product and cultural recognition.
