A stay in Cendras can revolve around a variety of themes: the Benedictine abbey and its medieval garden, nature education, and the landscape of the Galeizon. There is also Biosphera, an environmental education and interpretation centre, as well as a mountain biking trail, classified as challenging, that runs through the commune.

Benedictine Abbey and Medieval Garden

The Benedictine Abbey of Cendras was founded in the 10th century on the remains of a Roman villa. Its basilica-style floor plan and unadorned Romanesque style give the architecture a distinctive character. Its foundation on the remains of the villa links the building to an earlier chapter in the history of the area.

Visiting the church interior is subject to a specific timing condition: it is only possible in August, during the Concerts de l’Abbaye. Check the exact event dates before your trip. At the foot of the 10th-century abbey is the medieval garden, laid out on the site of a former garden that no longer exists. It adds the historical use of plants to the view of the monastery.

The garden showcases medicinal, food, ornamental and craft plants, including plants used for dyeing, weaving and carding. These uses illustrate different ways of working with plants: they are not only the focus as garden plants, but also for their practical applications. Recognised as an LPO wildlife refuge, the garden combines this historical focus with the theme of nature.

Traces of Different Eras

Another landmark in the local landscape is the Tour du Puech. Built in the 14th century, it is part of a chain of signal towers and overlooks the right bank of the Galeizon. Its date therefore sets it apart from the Benedictine abbey, which was founded in the 10th century. The abbey and the tower represent different historical building purposes: a monastery on the one hand, and part of a chain of signal towers on the other.

Cendras’s place in the mining basin of the Cevennes is also part of the area’s identity. Together with the medieval buildings, this gives the area a profile that encompasses both religious heritage and an industrial connection. If you are particularly interested in architectural history, the abbey and the Tour du Puech offer two clearly distinct points of reference in time.

Nature and Biosphera

Cendras is one of eight communes within the Vallée du Galeizon Natura 2000 site. The protected area is home to 18 species and 16 habitats of community interest. These figures refer to the site as a whole. Native vegetation in Cendras includes oak, chestnut, box and strawberry trees.

Biosphera complements the natural setting with an educational and interpretive offering. The centre in Cendras helps visitors understand how the relationship between people and nature has developed in the valleys of the Cevennes. In 2019, Biosphera became the Maison de la réserve de biosphère des Cévennes. Its focus is therefore distinct from the abbey’s architectural history: here, the subject is how the relationship between people and their natural surroundings has evolved.

Mountain Biking in Cendras

The La Mine et le Sauvage mountain biking trail passes through Cendras. The route is listed as a difficult loop, 32.7 kilometres long and marked in yellow. Its difficulty, length and loop format give you specific points to consider if you want to include this ride in your travel plans. Check the current route page before setting off, as route details may change.

Cycling is another way to shape your stay, distinct from focusing on the abbey, garden or Biosphera. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up which of these themes matter to your trip without treating the different offerings as equivalent: the ride is a designated mountain biking trail, while the abbey, garden and Biosphera each explore their own cultural and natural themes.
