Comps offers visitors a range of highlights: cultural history, walking and cycling routes, and a Bike Park. The site of Saint-Roman d'Aiguille and the Église Saint-Étienne offer two different historical perspectives. The Voie verte follows a former railway line and connects the destinations of Pont du Gard and Beaucaire; the Bike Park is dedicated to mountain biking and BMX. Local landmarks such as Île de la Gaffe and Pic de l'Aiguille round out the options. You can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.

Cultural history at Saint-Roman d'Aiguille and in the old town

The former troglodytic monastery and the remains of the castle at Saint-Roman d'Aiguille have been protected as historic monuments by decree dated 11 December 1990. The archaeological site also extends into the commune of Comps. It is therefore one of the historical landmarks relevant to Comps, although it is not confined to the old town.

The lower part of the site contains troglodytic monks' cells, a chapel, tombs, storage silos and a wine cellar. These different features make Saint-Roman d'Aiguille more than a single ruin: the site includes spaces and architectural traces that served various purposes. If you are interested in archaeological sites, this is a good reason to explore the historical use of the area.

The Église Saint-Étienne offers a different architectural point of interest. It is the central building in Comps's old town and features architecture typical of the Gard. Whereas at Saint-Roman d'Aiguille the focus is on the former monastery, the castle remains and the individual archaeological features, here the focus is on a church at the heart of the old town. Together, the two sites offer different ways to explore the area's cultural history.

Voie verte and Bike Park: explore on foot or by bike

The Voie verte in Comps is a safe, natural route along a former railway line. It leads to Pont du Gard or Beaucaire on foot or by bike and is part of the Uzès–Pont du Gard–Beaucaire route. An unusual, illuminated tunnel is another of its features. These destinations give the route a clear direction, while the route name also connects it with Uzès. When planning, you can take both the two destinations and the wider route into account.

To choose between the activities, it helps to distinguish between a route and a practice area: the Voie verte is for walking or cycling and visiting the destinations mentioned. The secure Bike Park, by contrast, is an outdoor area with suitable features for learning or improving your mountain biking and BMX skills. One option is a route; the other is a place to practise on features. Both suit a trip that includes an interest in cycling, but they offer different activities.

Landmarks in the Comps area

ĂŽle de la Gaffe is a bird sanctuary in the Comps area. This makes it a different kind of attraction from the historic buildings and cycling facilities. If you would like to include it in your plans, check local access arrangements.

Pic de l'Aiguille is a troglodytic site offering views towards the RhĂ´ne. Together with ĂŽle de la Gaffe, it provides a landscape interest distinct from the built-up old town, the archaeological remains and activities on the Voie verte.

For a stay in Comps, you can use these differences as a practical guide: the archaeological site and the church offer different perspectives on cultural history; the Voie verte is a good option for planning a walk or a cycling outing; and the Bike Park focuses on mountain biking and BMX. The landscape also offers the birdlife of ĂŽle de la Gaffe and views towards the RhĂ´ne from Pic de l'Aiguille. Which aspects take priority on your trip depends on the places and activities you want to include.
