Bizanet brings together historic buildings and seasonal leisure activities. When planning your stay, you can focus on different interests: the history of fortified sites, details of religious architecture, or activities at Domaine de la Source. The buildings and activities can be distinguished by their respective histories and character.

Castles and layers of history

Saint-Martin de Toques offers an insight into the history of fortified sites. The fortress is documented from the year 978. The château was built in feudal times to protect the road leading from the Viscounty of Narbonne into the Corbières. The ruins were listed as a historic monument by decree on 17 February 1926. These dates refer to different periods: 978 marks the documented status of the fortress, the feudal era its construction, and 1926 the listing of the ruins.

The historical layers at Château de Gaussan are different. In the 13th century, Fontfroide Abbey built a fortified farm at Gaussan. The château is partially protected as a historic monument; it was listed on 8 January 1986. Most of the buildings date from the 19th century and are primarily devoted to winegrowing. At Gaussan, a medieval original purpose and later buildings shaped by winegrowing thus sit side by side. The monument protection applies only in part, and the date 1986 refers to the listing, not the construction of the complex.

Religious architecture and historic stonework

The Priory of Saint Amans offers a different focus. Its oldest part is the crypt, which contains a medieval column and a clearly visible stone holy-water stoup. These details connect the building’s history with specific elements of its religious furnishings. The site brings together springs, lush laurel greenery and historic stonework. It particularly appeals to people seeking quiet and appreciating relics of the past.

The façade of the Priory of Saint Amans also draws attention: people passing by on the road to Ornaisons find its proportions, the windows partly hidden by vegetation, and the buttresses noteworthy. The crypt and the façade offer different perspectives on the priory—one focuses on historic architectural features, the other on its exterior form. This distinction can help you explore the religious buildings according to the details that interest you most.

Seasonal activities at Domaine de la Source

At Domaine de la Source, you can visit a free exhibition of minerals from around the world. There is also a seasonal 18-hole mini-golf course for children and adults. The light trail is another seasonal activity, with different highlights: a staircase filled with amethyst geodes and a passage illuminated by fountains in former wine vats. To finish, a projection shows the journey from stone extraction to jewellery-making.

The exhibition, mini-golf and light trail differ in both subject and format: they range from viewing minerals to a game and an illuminated sequence ending with a projection. Activities may change seasonally. If you are planning your trip around a particular activity, check in advance which activities are scheduled for your travel dates.

Winegrowing as another point of interest

Winegrowing also has a specific historical connection: in 1986, the winemakers of Les Celliers du Soleil received AOC recognition for Corbières. Together with the buildings at Château de Gaussan, which are primarily devoted to winegrowing, this offers another perspective on the subject: here, the use of the buildings; there, recognition for the winemakers.
