If you are looking for a hotel in Alzonne, you can choose how to explore the town based on what matters to you during your stay: the Canal du Midi, the river landscape around the Lampy and the Vernassonne, and historic buildings. The Fête Locale and a walking route through Alzonne also offer specific points of interest. Whether you want to focus on the landscape, culture or a local festival, you will find different sides to the town.

The Canal du Midi and river landscape

The Canal du Midi runs through the commune of Alzonne for 2 km. The older northern part lies on a hill bordered by the Lampy and the Vernassonne. This gives you two distinct landscape features to explore: the waterway running through the commune and the hill in the older northern part between the two rivers.

Alzonne is one of the eight communes in the Natura 2000 site “Vallée du Lampy”. The site is a Special Area of Conservation and includes the catchment areas of the Lampy and the Vernassonne. Fish species of Community interest found there include the Mediterranean barbel, bitterling, toxostome and brook lamprey. The presence of the European otter has been confirmed along the Vernassonne. If nature is also a factor in your choice of destination, this gives you a specific connection to waterways and protected species.

Church, aqueduct and traces of history

In older writings, the church of Alzonne was called “Notre-Dame du Mont-Soleil”; today, it is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its bell tower also has a history of its own: it contains four bells, two of which are listed in the inventory of historic monuments. The former name and its current dedication offer two different ways to understand the history of the church.

The Rébenty Aqueduct can be seen on the border between Alzonne and Bram. It allows the Canal du Midi to cross the Rébenty stream. The structure is 25 m long, has four arches and a total height of 6 m. Its function and dimensions make it a clear example of how the canal and local waterways meet.

You can also discover historic remains as you walk through the lanes of Alzonne. This lets you combine a look at individual buildings with a walk around the town: the church and aqueduct are specific sights, while the lanes have further traces of history to discover.

Fête Locale and walking route

The Fête Locale d’Alzonne includes boules or pétanque, fishing, football, dancing and a ball. Cassoulet is also served in the streets of the town. The festival brings together a range of activities and a local culinary tradition. If you want to plan your trip around the Fête Locale, check the event dates; individual activities may change from year to year.

The “L’abbaye de Villelongue” walking route offers another way to explore Alzonne. It passes through Alzonne as well as Saint-Martin-le-Vieil and Raissac-sur-Lampy. Alzonne is therefore part of a route that also passes through these two communes. The festival and the walking route appeal to different travel interests: one offers a connection to a local event, the other a specific route to follow.
