Livry-Gargan: Culture, History and Parks
Accommodation in Livry-Gargan
Livry-Gargan combines a rich architectural and cultural history with several parks and the intermunicipal Parc forestier de la Poudrerie. When choosing a hotel in Livry-Gargan, you can consider whether you would like to focus on historic architecture, walks and landscapes, or cultural and leisure facilities. The Château de la Forêt, Lac de Sévigné and the green spaces represent different facets of the town.
Château de la Forêt and historic buildings
The Château de la Forêt was built in 1864 by Doctor Lefèvre in the style of Louis XIII. It bears the Île-de-France regional heritage label “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” (Regional Heritage of Interest). This brings together architectural history and a present-day cultural purpose: the Château is open to the public and hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year. Opening arrangements and programs may change, so check current visiting and event dates in advance.
The Église Saint-Michel offers another striking example of architecture. Its square concrete ground plan is arranged around a large central lantern tower with a square apex. Livry-Gargan’s historical heritage also includes the Abbey of Livry: in the 17th century, it was a place where the Marquise de Sévigné stayed. The church and the abbey thus represent different aspects of the town’s history—one through its distinctive architectural form, the other through its historical connection with a well-known figure.
Parks, lake and paths
The 9-hectare Parc Lefèvre offers space for walks and relaxation. The park is home to giant California redwoods and cedars, as well as century-old oaks and plane trees. The 4.2-hectare Parc de la Mairie offers a different landscape: it is a remnant of the Bondy Forest and features large oaks and a pond. The stated sizes and features make the comparison concrete—from the tree-filled Parc Lefèvre to the combination of oak trees and water in the Parc de la Mairie.
Lac de Sévigné is a natural remnant of the former park of the Abbey of Livry. A footpath allows you to walk all the way around the lake. The fully restored building of the Sainte-Marie spring also stands by the lake. A light well allows visitors to view the spring; information panels explain the site’s history. As paths and signage may change, check the latest information before your visit if needed.
Walking and hiking trails connect Livry-Gargan’s parks and bring the town’s cultural and historical heritage to life. This makes it possible to consider nature and urban history as interconnected themes, rather than limiting them to individual buildings. Lac de Sévigné links a natural landscape feature with the history of the former abbey park, while the paths provide a distinct way to explore the parks.
A larger natural area and activities
The Parc forestier de la Poudrerie covers 137 hectares and includes areas of Livry-Gargan, Sevran, Villepinte and Vaujours. It preserves traces of the former gunpowder manufacturing industry. Forest ponds and open grassland support diverse flora and fauna; several notable bird species helped the park become part of the Natura 2000 network in Seine-Saint-Denis. In the part belonging to Livry-Gargan, both family walks and more challenging hikes are possible. The park’s scale and former industrial use distinguish it from the smaller urban green spaces.
The Golf de la Poudrerie golf course is also located within the municipal territories of Livry-Gargan and Sevran. It has a compact 9-hole course and practice areas. Course layout and access may change; check the latest information before planning to use it.
Cultural and leisure facilities
The Micro-Folie Livry-Gargan offers a free digital museum with high-resolution access to numerous works of art. It is complemented by a FabLab with a 3D printer, digital sewing machine, vinyl cutter and scroll saw. Visitors can also use virtual reality headsets. Thematic tours of the digital museum and FabLab workshops can be booked. Collections, programs and access arrangements may change; check dates and booking options in advance.
The Centre nautique Roger Lebas has three pools: a 25 × 15-meter swimming pool with six lanes, a smaller pool with a current channel and massage jets, and a paddling pool for children under three. The facility therefore offers different types of pools in one place. As operating arrangements may change, check the latest opening and usage information.
The Médiathèque René-Cassin is open to everyone. You can read, borrow documents, work, find information and attend cultural events there. Services and opening hours may change; check the latest information if you are planning a visit.
