For your stay in Juilly, cultural history and a walking route can be planned separately: the former Oratorian college and Saint-Étienne Church represent distinct architectural and artistic histories; the 11.5 km walking route follows the Beuvronne and Ru de la Maquerelle.

The Former College: Building Phases and Courtyards

The Oratorians founded the college in 1638; most of it was built in the 18th century. Its four open courtyards recall monastic building plans from the 17th and 18th centuries. Some 18th-century staircases and wood panelling have been preserved. The chapel of the former college was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Henry Faucheur built the library out of concrete.

Parts of the former college have been listed as historic monuments since 6 May 2021. The protected complex includes the Sainte-Geneviève fountain in its entirety. The former college park has remarkable gardens; since 31 July 2003, they have been included in the preliminary inventory of the general French heritage inventory. Check current access arrangements before visiting; they may change during redevelopment.

Saint-Étienne: Architecture and Art

Saint-Étienne Church was rebuilt in the 19th century by architect Louis Auguste Boileau. Its structural framework is made of iron: pillars, capitals, and ribs rest on stone and cement bases and floors. Thus, in addition to its period of construction, the structure and its materials are among its notable architectural details.

The church contains several documented works of art. The Stations of the Cross are made of carved, polychrome-painted oak with low-relief decoration. The statue Notre-Dame des moissons is a directly carved polychrome wooden sculpture. The statue Christ on the Cross depicts a polychrome figure on a flat cross with a polygonal base; it stands on the high altar. The descriptions of the works therefore differ in terms of material, technique, and location.

Walking Route and Getting There

The walking route, described in 2023, starts in Juilly, follows the Beuvronne and Ru de la Maquerelle, and is 11.5 km long. Confirm the current route markings locally. The route provides a practical basis for planning how much time to set aside for an outing on foot.

Archives and Historical Connections

The Sœurs de Saint-Louis congregation was founded in 1842 in Juilly, in the Diocese of Meaux, by Abbé Louis Bautain. The archive collection includes works about Bautain, the Dames de Saint-Louis, and Juilly. In addition to the history of the earlier-founded Oratorian college, the collection thus provides a distinct historical connection to the town.

An archive guide updated in 2016 states that visits to consult and use the archives of the Sœurs de Saint-Louis in Juilly are by appointment. Confirm the possibility of making an appointment before travelling.
