The birthplace of Xavier Bichat
The Maison natale de Xavier Bichat is located in Thoirette and is partially protected as a Monument historique. It was listed on 18 May 1990. The protected features include the façades and roofs, as well as several specific elements inside and outside the house.
On the ground floor, these include a fireplace plate bearing the name Claude Bichat; upstairs, the protected feature is the fireplace and its plate. A livestock watering trough, separated from the house by a path, is also protected. The partial protection thus covers not only the façades and roofs but also specific fireplace features and a separate element.
La Lône and the Ain river landscape
A 2014 biodiversity document places the entire municipality of Thoirette within the Natura 2000 site “Petite Montagne du Jura.” Boundaries and management details may be updated. La Lône is a side channel of the Ain in Thoirette-Coisia that was fully restored in 2021. More than 2.5 hectares of wetlands were created as part of the restoration.
These are two different scales for understanding the landscape: the Natura 2000 designation covers the entire municipality, while the restoration created more than 2.5 hectares of wetlands at La Lône. The Sentier de la Lône runs along the banks of the Ain in Thoirette. The project was carried out in collaboration with the CPIE (Centre permanent d’initiatives pour l’environnement) du Haut Jura, whose aim is to provide environmental education to the public.
Planning cycling and paddling
The Tour du lac de Coiselet is a 30.5 km cycling loop, signposted with green cycle route marker 16. The starting point is the car park at Thoirette town hall. Check the signposting and local parking conditions before setting off.
Paddles are available to rent at the leisure centre in Thoirette. The round-trip paddle from there to Lac de Conflans takes one hour; launch from the launching pontoon in Thoirette. Water conditions may affect availability, so check access before setting out.
The key details differ when choosing a route: the cycling loop is described by its 30.5 km distance, while the paddling route is described as a one-hour round trip. One gives a distance and the other a time frame.
